UTMB Infectious Disease Clinician, Considers One Health Approaches in Fighting Emerging Infectious Diseases

While sitting at a table outside of Old Red, Dr. Susan McLellan divulged to me tales of the over 20 years of experience she has as an infectious disease expert and One Health proponent. Her career has taken her to numerous African countries, the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, and finally here to UTMB where she is the Medical Director for the Biocontainment Care Unit, one of few national facilities that can care for patients with high-consequence pathogens such as Ebola.

UTMB One Health Team Member and Colleagues are
Selected as Albert Schweitzer Fellows

UTMB One Health team member, Ashton Davis, and colleagues Vanesa Ochoa and Caitlin Aguirre have recently been selected as fellows for the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship Houston Galveston for their Street Medicine project. The Street Medicine project builds upon work by previous fellows who engaged with unhoused individuals in Galveston bi-weekly by providing basic necessities, identifying key leaders of the unsheltered population, and distributing meals from local farmers markets. This year, the team hopes to expand on this project by engaging new stakeholders, increasing access to social resources, addressing medical needs, and continuing to alleviate food insecurity. Congratulations Ashton, Vanesa, and Caitlin on this significant achievement! A link to the full article highlighting this achievement can be found here.
