Launch of the Bioeconomy Sustainability Indicator Model (BSIM)

Our new Bioeconomy Sustainability Indicator Model (BSIM) is a flexible tool to map the sustainability of bioeconomy projects. The BSIM can be used to analyse specific elements within bioeconomy projects from specific biomass resources, supply chains, technologies or whole bioeconomy project value chains. The model is accompanied by a guidance manual and a paper published in Renewable Energy: Mapping the sustainability of bioenergy to maximise benefits, mitigate risks and drive progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals. The model was launched at an online webinar with Andrew Welfle, University of Manchester and Mirjam Roeder, Aston University. Access the model, the webinar recording and the paper via our website

Examining net zero infrastructure challenges at Green Infrastructure Week

Postgraduate students: Submit your entry for the REA Future Game Changers Award

The Association for Renewable Energy and Clean Technology (REA) is launching a new award for this year’s British Renewable Energy Awards to find postgraduate students who will be Future Game Changers in the field of renewable energy and technology. The winning postgraduate student will present an innovative idea or concept that could accelerate the race to achieve net zero. The winner will be chosen from a shortlist of 10 entries exhibited at the Gala Awards Dinner in Birmingham on 9 June 2022, and will receive the Award along with a small bursary.

The Supergen Bioenergy Hub is supporting the Award – more information and how to apply is on our website. Make sure to submit your entry by 22 May!

Apply to undertake a Supergen Bioenergy Hub secondment

Early career researchers interested in carrying out secondment projects should discuss their ideas initially with an interested company and then apply using the form online. Participating companies and ECRs need to be members of the Hub. If you're interested in a project but don't have an ECR or company partner, please get in touch to discuss it. Please note that projects will need to be completed by October.

PhD student eligibility will depend on the host university’s regulations. If you would like to undertake a secondment, you would need approval to pause your PhD for the duration of the placement and provide evidence that the placement will contribute towards achieving your PhD. Your stipend would also be paused, but secondment funding could cover wages. An ideal time to undertake a secondment would be after you've submitted.
