May 2022 President Newsletter
May 1 is May Day! Anyone else remember making paper flower baskets to hang on neighbor’s doors?
Now that I’ve aged myself, let me acknowledge the wonderful applicants for this year’s awards, scholarships and affiliate board positions. Never let it be said that Arizona dietetic professionals are second to any, in spite of our lack of licensure. Also let me encourage anyone reading this to please consider acknowledging a peer, a student and/or consider getting involved in your local district, on the state or national level. In fact we’ll need two new or reapplied Student Liaison/Representatives soon for the June 1,2022-May 31,2023 term. Students go to the AND website.
Allow me to introduce a very important person in my career, former President of the then Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Donna Watson. Donna was a mentor and dear friend for many years. Probably the most important thing she taught was how to deal with curve balls/unanticipated challenges, which we’ve all had. But she was excellent at getting me to dig down and get the answers, not giving me unsolicited advice.
An important writing she shared—
“When trouble comes your soul to try,
I’ll be the friend who just “stands by.”
Perhaps there’s nothing I can do,
The thing is strictly up to you,
For there are troubles all your own,
And paths the soul must tread alone—
I hope it helps someway to pull you through
Although there’s nothing I can do.” Unknown
