HERE Center Weekly
May 3, 2022
Edition 59
The HERE Center is a university-chartered center at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) dedicated to community-partnered participatory research. Located in CSUN’s first research building, Lilac Hall, the center was chartered in 2019 with the goal of institutionalizing and accelerating the university’s health disparities research through dedicated campus resources, community affiliations, and joint activities with research partners. We seek and initiate cooperative research projects targeting local health issues.

Advocacy in Research: Creating a Policy Brief

Change happens when people make their voices heard. One of the ways change manifests is through creating policy briefs that can urge lawmakers to make informed decisions that shape public life. In the context of academia, students, scholars, and faculty can use see their research in action by integrating policy and advocacy into their work.

To address this, the HERE Center is hosting Advocacy in Research: Creating a Policy Brief, a workshop centered on creating policy briefs!

Topics include:
  • The importance of research-based policy briefs
  • The parameters of an action-based approach to policy advocacy
  • How to write an effective policy brief
  • And more!

The workshop will be led by Emely Pineda, a HERE Center intern and experienced advocate for healthcare reform. For this workshop, we will be utilizing housing and houselessness data from Los Angeles Family Housing (LAFH).

Date: Wednesday, May 4, 2022 | 5:00pm - 6:15pm

Pads, Tampons, and Liners for the CSUN Food Pantry

Health Education Student Organization (HESO) is asking the community for donations of pads, tampons, and liners for CSUN's Food Pantry. As menstrual products are not covered by WIC, health insurance, or CalFresh (food stamps), many people in the San Fernando Valley struggle to purchase them every month. Tax exemptions on menstrual products have also been discontinued due to decreasing COVID-19 cases.

Donations can be made through the following:
  • Add items through HESO's Amazon wishlist.
  • Make a walk-in donation for CSUN's Food Pantry.
  • Purchasing decals through form.
  • Sending money to HESO's Venmo account (HESOCSUN).

Research Supplement Aids in Focus on Children's Health Development and Wellbeing

The Life Course Intervention Research Network (LCIRN) has published a supplement containing 17 research articles to Pediatrics, a peer-reviewed medical journal from the American Academy of Pediatrics. The supplement contains new intervention approaches that allow researchers to hone in on health improvements across lifetimes and generations.

This supplement is supported due to a demonstrated lack of resiliency and health reserve among the early-life stages, primarily in populations of children, pre-teens, and adolescents.
