Dear Friends,
With the Year of the Young Organist (July 2021-June 2022) drawing to a close, won’t you please take a moment to think of the young pianists and organists in your circle? The AGO offers an impressive array of resources to help you reach out. If you haven’t seen these already, take a look:
- The Young Person’s Guide to the Pipe Organ—a whimsically illustrated introduction to the king of instruments, now published online.
- Lessons for the New Organist and Common Questions About the Organ—more than 30 two- to seven-minute videos that teach basic skills and techniques to beginning organists, particularly pianists who are making a transition to organ playing.
- AGO Achievement Awards—for students, an opportunity to demonstrate mastery; for teachers, a set of outlines for structuring the first lessons at the console.
- Rex, King of Instruments—the darling, ten-minute video produced by our very own Mike Carson, Glen Hicks, and Harold Stuart, now licensed and streaming on YouTube for an extra year. (I’m sharing it with the youth in my ward at Activity Days this month!)
- Find an organ teacher here in Utah County by browsing the listings at uvago.org, or nationally by checking the listings at agohq.org.
If your circle is wider than Utah County, you can still reach out! My son who studies in New York just took advantage of AGO’s offer—free one-year membership for organists under 30—and has spent the last month touring pipe organs of Harlem.
One final invitation: Please mark your calendars—you and your youth!—for our spring informal, to be held Friday, May 20, at Jack Stoneman’s stake center in Spanish Fork. Bring a piece or two, prepared or in progress, and try them out in front of friendly ears on a beautifully refurbished Wicks pipe organ. We don’t schedule advance rehearsals for informals, but you’re welcome to check out the stop list at the link below.

May 20 (Friday), 7:00 p.m. Spanish Fork Stake Center
Our final activity of the season will be a chapter informal. We thank Jack Stoneman for hosting this event. Please bring a piece or two, finished or unfinished, to share with our chapter. You can download the organ stop list for the refurbished and expanded Wicks Op. 5193 below. We look forward to a fun evening of making music with friends.

The BYU students and faculty who went on the German organ tour will be back this week. We will secure a date and location to hear all about their adventures. Stay tuned!

James Welch to perform three times in May
|
|
|
|
May 6 (Friday, 7:30 p.m.): A recital to celebrate the recent upgrades to the 1974 Wicks organ at Rock Canyon Ward, 3050 Mojave Lane, in Provo. Music by German, French, Portuguese, Italian, English, Canadian, and American composers. This concert will be live-streamed at https://youtu.be/cXCLxiQFWTc.

May 15 (Sunday, 3:00 p.m.) "Bach to the Future"
This concert will be performed at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 50 West 200 North, Provo, on the unique mechanical organ built in 1967 by the Dutch firm of G. A. C. de Graaf—the only organ of its kind in Utah Valley. The program will include music of Bach, C. P. E. Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Balbastre, Galuppi, and John Philip Sousa. Joining on the program will be pianist Ariel Wong. Together they will perform the Concerto in C major for two keyboard instruments by Antonio Soler, and the O. K. Chorale by P. D. Q. Bach.

In Memoriam: David T. Worlton (1941-2022}
|
|
|

David & Lorene Worlton
at the UVAGO 30th Anniversary on October 30, 2009
David T. Worlton, CAGO, an active member of the UVAGO chapter for many years, passed away in Lehi on April 8, 2022. David and his wife Lorene raised five children in the Lehi-Highland area. He was an electrical engineer and engineering consultant at Kennecott Utah Copper and faithfully served in his Latter-day Saint congregations.
According to his obituary, “At an early age, David began taking piano lessons, which he excelled at for about ten years. He became the designated pianist everywhere he went, and even played with Bud Hutchings in his dance band for three years. While serving his mission in Ireland and Scotland, he took an interest in the large organs in iconic European cathedrals. He had found his true musical outlet.” After only a few lessons from Tabernacle organist, Roy Darley, “David became the designated organist at nearly every church meeting from that moment on.” In 2004, David passed the AGO Colleague Exam, and he served as UVAGO sub-dean in 2005-06.
The chapter thanks Marianne Denison and her siblings for making a contribution to the chapter’s Memorial Scholarship Fund in honor of their uncle Dave.

Remaining BYU Organ Online Training Sessions
Encourage your students and organ friends to register online for the remaining free classes. The next session begins Thursday, May 5, with Dr. Mark Campbell teaching the most important foundations of a good legato pedal technique. Legato fingering techniques will be the topic on June 2.

The National Convention of the American Guild of Organists is held biennially in even-numbered years and reflects the diverse aspects of the Guild and its official work across the country. Held as a function of the national organization in partnership with a selected chapter, it represents a coalition between the national leadership and the host chapter’s leadership. This joint venture combines the talents and creative strengths of each, and represents the larger vision of the whole membership and its needs.
The AGO holds both national and regional conventions. The regional conventions are held during the summers of odd-numbered years. For more information on national and regional conventions, please visit the AGO website, www.agohq.org.
