Cool and Now Wet?

Well that title doesn't tell you anything you don't know, but recognize condition are highly variable across the state so let's break this down. The U.S. Drought Monitor report (April 28) showed significant improvement in dry conditions across Iowa, however, areas of east central Iowa, and the northwestern 1/3 of the state are still listed as D0, (abnormally dry) to D2 (severe drought). The next report will come out on Thursday and I anticipate more changes with the rain up until today. How wet and cold was April? Honestly, not that wet except for the Mason City and Northwood area. The cold temperatures kept us out of the field early and now the persistent rain is keeping us out of the field. Here are April rainfall and the Growing Degree Day (GDD) accumulations for locations across the counties I serve. If I run the table from April 11 (insurance planting date for corn) through May 1, the GDDs still average 45-60% of average.

Table curated from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet on May 2. Rainfall and growing degrees days from April 1 through April 30, 2022.  "Climo" is the long term average.

New Pest Forecasting Tool

ISU Extension Entomologists Erin Hodgson and Ashley Dean, along with the Daryl Herzmann with the Iowa Environmental Mesonet, have developed a pest forecasting tool based on growing degree days. Pests included are seedcorn maggot, alfalfa weevil, soybean aphid, common stalk borer and Japanese beetle. For more information and detailed steps see New Pest Forecasting Page on the Mesonet Website
