Learning in Action

The chicks hatched!
Our kindergarten students have been anxiously awaiting Hatch Day! In their classroom this spring, they have watched the eggs in the incubator while learning about the different stages of development and growth happening  inside. The children have prepared a brooder for the chicks and will watch them grow for a bit longer before they head back to the farm.
Meet our newest Board Member
Sarah Grenert-Funk
Sarah Grenert-Funk is thrilled to join the board of trustees at the Gardner School of Arts and Sciences. A former middle and high school English teacher, she currently serves as the Head of Upper School at Oregon Episcopal School in Portland. Sarah lives in NE Portland with her husband, Joe, and two daughters, Margaret (8) and Louisa (4). Originally from the east coast, Sarah enjoys everything the Pacific Northwest has to offer, from outdoor adventures to discovering new coffee shops. In her free time, Sarah can be found going on bike rides with her daughters, reading, creating ceramics, or exploring new neighborhoods. Sarah was drawn to the Gardner School because of its student-centered and holistic approach to education, clear commitment to progressive education, and the passion and enthusiasm of its educators.

Exciting News!
Wheels in School

Wheels in School is back for the spring edition on Friday, June 10th! Students can bring their non-motorized bikes or scooters for recess riding fun. Staff will supervise safe riding during all recesses. Children are required to wear helmets. Don't forget to plan for extra time unloading and reloading of gear at drop off and pick up.

Gardner Market Returns June 3rd!
The Gardner Market was an annual tradition at the Gardner School for many years, and we are now able to bring it back to the campus! Students in our kindergarten-6th grade program learn about being an entrepreneur, develop a product idea and business plan, and then create a product to sell at the Gardner Market. Our kindergarten and 1st grade classes work as a whole class, and our 2nd- 6th graders develop products independently or in small teams. This year, we are working with the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce to connect with local business people who can share insights into the work of creating and running a business.

Along with valuable creative and academic skills, students learn about giving with the proceeds of the sale being donated to a local charity, voted on by the classes. Students are allowed to choose if they will donate all of their proceeds, or they can keep up to 50% of proceeds to cover the cost of materials.

Teachers start this process in the classroom, but it requires family participation in the planning and execution of your child's vision at home. While parents are supporters of their child's learning, we know that the kids will be the most excited and feel the most proud of their accomplishments if the projects are created by them. Teachers will be starting these conversations this week, with more information sent home soon!

Here are some past items children have created, but many more ideas could be great!
  • friendship bracelets
  • flower pots or plant starts
  • dog or cat toys
  • origami
  • magnets or stickers
  • small pieces of artwork
  • keychains
  • bookmarks
  • homemade soaps or candles
  • small homemade toys
  • and so much more!
We invite our entire community to attend and support our Gardner Market! Our market will take place on Friday, June 3rd at 1:30pm.
Gardner's Got Talent!

We are hosting our annual Gardner School Talent Show for our K-6 students on Thursday, May 26th at 2:30 pm. Our students have been learning group songs in their Music classes, and will perform those in addition to any individual or small group talents students would like to showcase.

Does your child want to perform? Please complete this audition form to sign up for a spot before Monday, May 16th. All kinds of talents are welcome- music, dance, performances of all kinds!

Campus snapshots

Last week, our 3rd and 4th grade students went on their overnight field trip and camped in yurts, our Klickitat students went to the Portland Art Museum, and chicks hatched in Kalama! We appreciate how our community showered our teachers in appreciation, and every classroom was abuzz with learning, gratitude, and joy.
