SKPS & The Community

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

May is recognized as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Throughout the month, we will share stories that celebrate the unique culture of our AAPI students and staff. SKPS Native Language Specialists Isaac and Sofina start the month with a video welcoming our community into this heritage month.
 

Community Learning Session #3: Pacific Islander  Stories from Oregon 

The third Community Learning Session is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 16 and will be hosted by Salem-Keizer School Board Chair Osvaldo Avila and SKPS Director of Student Equity, Access and Advancement Cynthia Richardson.

Partnership spotlight
Partnership Spotlight: United Way of the Mid-Willamette Valley

To support ongoing academic support for SKPS students, the district has partnered with the United Way of the Mid-Willamette Valley to offer an additional Enrichment Academy at Grant Community School. This before and after school program for elementary students includes activities such as art, STEM activities, technology, help with homework, PE and literacy. 

This specific additional program is supported through the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funding. At no cost to families, this enrichment program is designed to meet the needs of children and families and are unique to the school to fit the needs of their students.

Each community-based organization program is funded through the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER). You can learn more about ESSER III funding on the State of Oregon website.

SafeOregon – Report confidential safety concerns

As a community, all of us -- students, staff, families and community -- play critical roles in maintaining safety within our school buildings. Report suspicious activity related to our schools to administration or through SafeOregon. 

SafeOregon is a statewide confidential tip line maintained by the Oregon State Police. The tip line gives students, parents, staff and community members a confidential way to report safety threats or potential acts of violence.

On May 4, a virtual event will be held to educate students, parents and the community about the dangers of fake pills made from deadly fentanyl.

News from Our Schools
Kindergarten registration is now open! 

It’s (almost) time for kindergarten! Kindergarten is an important year of foundational learning and we are thrilled to have your child and family as a part of Salem-Keizer schools. Kindergarten is FREE for all children who will be 5 years of age or older by September 10, 2022! 

Make sure you register early to have the opportunity for transition and prep opportunities over the summer, which will be available for all incoming SKPS kindergarten students!

SKPS honored for outstanding commitment to music education

Salem-Keizer Public Schools has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from The National Association of Music Merchants Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education.

“Excellence in music programs has always been a long-standing priority for Salem-Keizer Public Schools,” says SKPS Coordinator of Music and Drama Stephen Lytle. “We know that music education has supported our students on their path to success, whether it be in bridging a strong connection to their school or community, to potentially following their passion for music into their adult lives as professionals.”
