Issue 3, May 2022

Welcome to the third oak processionary moth (OPM) programme update of 2022. Programme updates will be published regularly throughout the OPM season, covering key stages such as caterpillar emergence, as well as information and surveillance. Please feel free to share with your contacts where appropriate.

Spray Programme
Oak processionary moth caterpillars were first spotted emerging from their egg plaques in London on the 31st of March. A big thank you to the Royal Parks for monitoring egg hatch.
Our contractors began treating known affected oak trees from the 25th April. From surveying and monitoring activity over the past two years, we have identified more than 540 sites (areas with one or more trees) for treatment in the Buffer Zone. The majority of identified sites due for treatment have had their first sprays and we expect the second sprays to be undertaken within the next few weeks.

Other caterpillar reports
We have received many reports of native caterpillars being mistaken for OPM. Native caterpillars, such as Brown-Tail Moth or Ermine Moth are frequently confused for OPM and need not be reported to the Forestry Commission. Now is a good time to familiarise yourself with caterpillar species that could be mistaken for OPM. Please see the Forest Research webpages and this very handy poster to help you identify native species.

Training events reminder

A reminder that we are still taking places on our OPM awareness events. These will be held at Holly Lodge in Richmond Park on the 7th, 8th and 9th of June between 10:45-15:00. Please register your interest here. Just to note spaces are limited to around 25 people per day.
Volunteers needed for study on OPM parasitoid

Newcastle University are again looking for volunteers to help with an ongoing research project supported by Defra. This will help to integrate parasitism of OPM caterpillars into future management plans.

This year they are hoping to involve landowners who have OPM on site with the actual sampling in order to reach a greater range of sites and better understand the distribution of the main OPM parasitoid.

Sampling would involve collecting caterpillars just prior to them spinning nests and placing them into individual tubes along with recording any collection data. A full protocol and sampling kit containing PPE will be provided.

We would ask those who are interested to fill out the following form https://forms.ncl.ac.uk/view.php?id=8958406 by Friday 3rd June so that we can get kits sent out in time.

Reporting OPM

We expect towards the end of May we will start receiving further reports of OPM, when the caterpillars will be large enough to be seen by the public. It is at this time when they will be on the move and also developing the hairs which can cause irritation. This is a reminder to not approach or touch the caterpillars but please do report all OPM sightings to us via the online portal Tree Alert www.forestresearch.gov.uk/treealert.  Alternatively, you can send in your reports to opm@forestrycommission.gov.uk.

And finally...

If you’re new to OPM, please note that the OPM website with guidance on surveillance, identification and managing OPM is available at this link.

The Forestry Commission has a suite of communication resources which partners are welcome to use. PDF versions of posters, leaflets and banners are available under: https://opmhub.fera.co.uk/commandevents
