Rham’s Captain’s Log
May 6, 2022 (in 500 words-ish, more…or less. It really all depends on the word count.)

May the 4th was with us, Mayo straight Cinco’d us, and today we embark upon May 6, like it was some sort of date seared into our brains like a tattoo. Well, maybe not your brain, but mine.

Why? Oh, just some birthday shenanigans involving a very persistent friend who had a birthday on May 6. The day we returned to school from Christmas break every year, his “May 6” birthday campaign began, all leading to the day/weekend closest to where his birthday would fall, May 6.  His campaign always resulted in a sleepover birthday party with lots of good kid-birthday-snack-junk food-orange soda type stuff and every year, (EVERY YEAR) an “Ernest Goes to Camp” marathon that makes the TBS “Christmas Story” marathon look like child’s play (which I guess it actually is.) Yes, “Ernest Goes to Camp” on repeat (yes, overnight right into the pancake breakfast the next morning for those of us who made it that long.) This didn’t just occur in 3rd grade. Nope. We had a repeat in 4th grade then again in 5th and at that point, it had become tradition.  Every grade. Every year. “May 6.” “Don’t forget. May 6!”

Oh I didn’t forget, Mr. Smith. Happy birthday, old friend. (However, I’m fairly certain you won’t see this. Know what I mean, Vern?)

Now, that was pretty rhamdom, huh? That’s why you’re here. Don’t forget that. The particular story referenced above, could really go anywhere. I set it up that way. I wrote a few lines at the beginning that I call “primer” and after I’m bored with where I was taking the “secondary thought babble word bucket thing”, I just take a glance up the screen, transition into an already once referenced topic so seamlessly that the average reader doesn’t even notice. It's harder than one might think, and if not done just right, can lead to a poorly worded transitional trainwreck (or PWTT for short.) But tattoos are something I don’t have. Not a one. And, at 42, I figure if I ain’t got one by now, I may as well just take that one off the list. Because, if I’m not careful I’ll wake up 62, with a tattoo I can’t quite decipher, a motorbike I probably should not be on that’s entirely too loud, and my woman ridin’ …b…ehind me lady-like, lightly grasping my waist as to keep upright cuz I didn’t splurge for the diamond-studded, leather covered seat back and she’s just one throttle thrust away from an ouchie.  But I’m out there livin’ free, with a pet eagle named Eagle, and maybe a crossbow. My beard braid game is on point, and leather and ‘merica…. All because I got a tattoo? Oh heck, who’s to really say?

The Steel Horse Rally is set THIS WEEKEND in Downtown Fort Smith. And folks, other stuff is filling up the calendar like a dang bucket of goodness we all wanna drink from and I suggest ya start chugging. And speaking of marathons, there’s a Loving Fort Smith Out Loud marathon going on right now, and it’s really time you started participating if you’ve not already. The more the merrier is what they say and sometimes THEY have some good words.

Me too.

Sometimes.
