Te iwi tahi tatou - We are one family.
Tēnā koutou, Konnichiwa, As-salāmu 'alaykum, Hola,

Firstly, a warm welcome to you all to Term 2. I hope you had a good break over the holidays and are ready for a slightly more normal term here at school, (that's what I am hoping for anyway!) We are very much looking forward to inviting our families back to school for more events this term as you'll see in the list of dates for your diaries below.

Please make sure you take the time to book in for the Learning Showcase on May 19th.  This is when YOUR child will share their learning with you and you will get an excellent chance to see the school environment they are learning in.  This is your only opportunity this year to experience this.

EARLY FINISH - MAY 16th.  Your child's teacher should have sent you a message reminding you about this, but all of our teaching staff will be off-site at a professional development session.
School will close on May 16th at 2 pm.  Please email your child's teacher giving permission for your child to go home early that day and note how they will do this (walk, be picked up, scooter etc).  If your child is NOT able to leave school early that day then please tell us that as well.  We will ensure they are supervised by our Teacher Aides until 3pm and then released as normal.

Have a look a the list below and see what we have planned for this term - there is a lot going on!

I would also like to note that we are able to host our Whanau Hui this term.  Details will come out soon.

Ngā mihi

Principal

School Noticeboard

Early finish - Monday 16 May

Early finish at 2pm on Monday 16 May, as the staff are going to a learning hui put on by the Kahui Ako for all the local schools. Please send your child's teacher an email or write a signed note to give your child permission to be dismissed from school at 2pm. There will be staff at school to look after those who are staying until 3pm.

Learning Showcase Celebration!

Your child is preparing a presentation to share with you about some of their learning highlights at SWIS during Term 1 and the start of Term 2. This is our Learning Showcase evening, run by your child.  It is a great opportunity to see and hear what your child is most proud of in their learning.

Book by clicking this link
https://www.schoolinterviews.co.nz/code/kzm3q or go to www.schoolinterviews.co.nz and enter the event code kzm3q.

You will still receive two written reports about your child's progress (at the end of Terms 2 and 4) and you will have the opportunity to meet the teacher to discuss your child's progress at our Parent/Teacher conferences in Term 3.

School Photos - Monday 23 May

Please ensure your child is in full and correct school uniform that day. Your child has an envelope with information about packs you can purchase of their photos, if you want them. Envelopes need to be returned to school, even if you have paid online for the photo bundles. If you are paying cash, please make sure it is the exact amount, as we can't provide change.

School Cross Country

Our annual SWIS Cross Country event is Monday 9 May (postponement 12 May) from 10.40am at McAlister Park.

There will be two options for your child: the non competitive is one lap of the course and the competitive is two laps of the course.

If your child wants to compete in the WRISSA Cross Country the following week then they will have to enter the competitive two lap race and finish in the top 8 to qualify.

Your child will need to wear their PE gear, suitable running shoes, a warm jacket and bring their drink bottle. If the event is postponed to Thursday then we will inform you via our website and Facebook by 8am on the day. One of the main requirements from the Wellington City Council is that we stay OFF the sports fields.

This is an exciting event and a lot of fun. Feel free to come along and support your child as they give their best and push their physical limits!

COVID Update & Reminders

As per our message last week, the Board of Trustees met on Wednesday (27 April) and resolved to continue to support face mask-wearing at SWIS. But in line with the current guidance from the Ministry of Education, we will no longer require the use of masks.

This also follows the current public health advice which is that at Orange, face masks are no longer required at school but should continue to be strongly encouraged when indoors.

We will continue to supply masks to adults and children as we have done in the past.

Just a reminder too that at Orange, students aged 12 and above are still required to wear a face mask on school or public transport.

At school, we will continue to keep other measures in place including ensuring our indoor spaces are well-ventilated, encouraging good hand hygiene and cough and sneeze etiquette, and, most importantly, encouraging students and staff to stay home if they are sick.

Please continue to let me, Toby Stokes (principal@swis.school.nz or 022 536 8035) and your child's teacher know if there is a positive case within your household or your child is confirmed positive, including if they become positive after a period of isolating.
