May Theme: Recognition, Appreciation & Celebration

10 Free & Easy Ways to Celebrate a Co-Worker (That'll Make You Look Great in the Process)

You like your co-workers, right? Or, you at least appreciate them for all the hard work they’ve done over the years. In some cases, you wouldn’t even be where you are without their support, help and positivity (especially on the rougher days).

So, don’t you want to acknowledge them when they have a small win, celebrate a birthday, or reach a big milestone?

And the thing is, celebrating someone else is actually beneficial for you, too! It makes people more likely to share your achievements, it makes you look good (You hang out with happy, successful people, so you must be as well!), and it strengthens your relationships with all your colleagues.

But the tricky thing is, most of us can’t afford to congratulate our co-workers with gifts. Here are 10 completely free ideas that’ll be just as good as (if not, better than) purchasing something. Continue reading

SHOUT OUT

Para Props!

I would like to send a shout out to Pam Funk, paraeducator at Apollo High School for going above and beyond for our students. Pam is observant, helpful, kind, and always has a smile on her face. She has also taken time off, using her personal time, to support the students we serve with their equipment needs. Thank you for being you!

REC Loves Their Lunch Ladies

This week our special shout out goes to our amazing nutrition team! We are so blessed to have Kristi Scott who is our head cook for Roosevelt, Prince of Peace, Katherine Johnson and CO2. We have had many wonderful people serving our students lunch over the years, but most often we were graced with Donna Mahan and Linda Becker as our visiting lunch ladies this year. We are so thankful for our new lunch lady Sue Kelley and give her a huge REC welcome! She has done a beautiful job seamlessly moving into this role and always has a smile and patience for our kiddos as she prepares and hands out their lunches! Chili and the orange chicken are two of our building's favorites! Breakfasts are always ready to go and both daily meals help our kiddos have a full stomach and provide energy for them to do their best learning!

A special thank you from the bottom of our hearts to all nutritional services and other 742 staff who worked above and beyond to provide food for our families during the pandemic! You all make an incredible difference!

North Robotics Team Heads to Worlds

Students on North Junior High School‘s VEX robotics team are headed to the World Robotics Championship, a trip that has been three years in the making. The last two years, the team narrowly missed their opportunity to go due to robots breaking down at the last minute. Finally, they earned their seat at the international competition!

Noah Millerbernd, a seventh grader at North and robotics team lead, remembers how this dream began at Westwood Elementary School.

“During fourth grade,” he explains, “the fifth graders showed what robotics was all about at the end of the school year. And I really like building stuff. In fifth grade, I made it [on the team].”

Teammate and seventh grader Ezekiel Jennings wanted to be in robotics because his older brother began competing his first year at North. So, as soon as he was in sixth grade, he signed up. A third teammate and seventh grader, Hudson Braun, joined robotics at the urging of his friends Millerbernd and Jennings. This year was his first year.

Millerbernd remembers his team started out more basic than the other Westwood teams. His team didn’t have a “brain” (central processing unit) or batteries to use. It was more rudimentary. Continue reading
