Old North Dayton Neighborhood Celebrates the Opening of African Market
If you are looking for a new place to visit, I would suggest stopping by Umoja East and Central African Market for some tasty and authentic foods. Located in the Old North Dayton neighborhood on Stanley Avenue. The Welcome Dayton team has been working with the owners of the store since January.
Angelique Nyambanguka owns the market with her husband, Alexis Sebatwatre. It was their desire to connect the community through food and a business mindset to open the market. Click here to read more about what the market has to offer.

Students Reflections
In the traditional sense, heroism is the highest manifestation of devotion. A hero is a person who, based on achievements and qualities, is seen as an example to follow. Echo and Dr. VanderWal at The Luke Commission embody what our Global Health Scholars strive to be. Their presentation at BSOM in April was full of emotion, inspiration, love, resilience, and determination to save lives. Here are reviews from students about the presentation:

"When it came down to deciding what trip I would go on, I had a hard time picking. I had never heard of Eswatini, so traveling to some unknown location for a global health trip sounded exciting. I am extremely glad I did after listening to Echo and Dr. VanderWal's talk about TLC." - Daniel Boyes, M1

"I wanted to work with TLC this summer because their approach to global health and overall philosophy of medicine aligns with the way I hope to care for patients in the future. TLC provides holistic care to the people of Eswatini that is truly sustainable and rooted in directly meeting the needs of their patients. I was amazed by Echo and Dr. VanderWal’s presentation! The level of care they provide to patients and the incredible work TLC has done and continues to do during this pandemic is truly inspiring. I am in awe of the way TLC has been able to build a healthcare system, the infrastructure to support it, and their own EMR from the ground up guided solely by what is best for their patients." - Matt Huston, M1

"Hearing about the wonderful work and words of The Luke Commission was a like a breath of fresh air in what is a mundane time right now. We both spend time within the Dayton community volunteering and shadowing, the most time is spent with our heads in the books, reading more about medicine and patients rather than seeing how medicine is being practiced. It was quite inspirational to witness how people who walked in our shoes in the same hallways are practicing medicine in a life changing way. How the years here built a foundation for them but weren’t defining of the entirety of their medical career. I enjoyed learning much about how they overcame the cultural and professional challenges, and how they’re implementing ways to change the way medicine is approached as a team. Among the 5 core C’s they spoke about, they particularly stressed the importance of character (over competence). Competence is very very important, but if the character does not match, it is a waste. That was a very touching statement as we both value their importance of not losing our character, our empathy, ability to connect with people, as we build our competency, especially in these foundations years.  Although we have yet to visit Eswatini, hearing the passion in Echo and Dr. VanderWal’s voice when they spoke about their country and how The Luke Commission has been beacon for hope for so many resonated with us. We were so intrigued and also impressed after hearing about the amazing and groundbreaking work that The Luke Commission has done that we’ve talked about assisting in any way that we can and have had discussions about traveling to Eswatini during our training." - Adjoa Cofie, M2 and Rachel St. Bernard, M2
