Volunteers return to Big Basin Redwoods State Park, make a big impact

Did you get any spring cleaning done last weekend? We did, thanks to 33 hardworking volunteers who helped California State Parks staff with clean-up projects at Big Basin Redwoods State Park:
  • 25 6 x 6 x 6-foot burn piles were stacked
  • 75 10-foot redwood split rails were milled
  • 120 feet of split rail fencing was installed around the Redwood Loop Trail.
Whew! We couldn’t do it without volunteers and extend the biggest heartfelt thank you to everyone who came out on Sunday. Mountain Parks Foundation and Friends were happy to provide lunch and logistical support to the volunteers and staff. Interested in participating in the future? Castro Adobe SHP makes Good Times 'Best Of' list

In April, Good Times Santa Cruz released their Best of Santa Cruz County 2022: Editors' Picks, and Castro Adobe State Historic Park was featured as the "Best Slice of California History You Never Knew Existed." This feature highlights the historical significance of this adobe as well as the collaboration efforts between Friends and California State Parks to restore it.

Visit the Castro Adobe located at 184 Old Adobe Road in Watsonville, on May 7, at the public Open House Event, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Preregister for a tour of the historic property. The event is free; donations are gratefully accepted.

Rancho San Andrés Castro Adobe State Historic Park is a historic Rancho hacienda built between 1848-49 and represents the Mexican Rancho Period of California History (1821-1848). This adobe was badly damaged in 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. State Parks, working together with Friends, undertook the restoration of the Castro Adobe in order to preserve and interpret for the public the only remaining Rancho era building in the Pajaro Valley.
