The Australia Indonesia Awards Presentation night was a gala event at the Grace Hotel in Sydney.
The awards recognise and honour Australians and Indonesians who have contributed to greater friendship and understanding between Australians and Indonesians.
Two of the finalists were present at the event whilst the other finalists were able to participate via Zoom.
Guests of honour included the Indonesian Ambassador HE Dr Siswo Pramono and Ibu HE Marsia Pramono, the Indonesian Consul General HE Vedi Kurnia Buana and Ibu Fanny Buana, and the Director of the Australia Indonesia Institute, Ms Elena Williams. The Governor General HE David Hurley was an apology as he had to remain in Canberra to receive the Prime Minister the following morning.
Cultural performances included Mutiara performing her Tari Jaipong Dance, and Kadek Ambara Jaya Kaswara performing his Tari Baris Tunggal dance.
The winner in the Education category was Ms Erna Tan who has devoted a lifetime to the teaching of Bahasa Indonesia to children and to adults. Some of the guests commented that she had taught them as children.
The winner in the Health category was Ms Susan Bishop for her work in establishing medical clinics in the Karangasem region of Bali. She accepted her award via Zoom.
The winner in the Innovation category was Alexander Soeriyadi for his research into biomedical, food and agricultural applications and for modifying the efficiency of sunlight to improve plant yields. His family were with him to accept his award.

Nick is the organiser of Java Lava with monthly treks throughout the mountains of Indonesia. He first came to Indonesia with a student group in 1972 and had two postings there with the United Nations (FAO) in 70s and early 80s. On retirement in 2004, he returned to Indonesia - rice farming near Sukabumi, and mountain climber (about 70 volcanoes to date).

Denise Finney, Chief Executive Officer of the Indonesia Australia Language Foundation (IALF), has been based in Indonesia for over 25 years, working in the field of language, education and development. Originally from Northern Ireland, she started her English language training career in London, before moving to the other side of the world to work in Universitas Pattimura in Ambon, Maluku. Following a couple of years in Bandung, Denise moved to Bali where she has lived ever since, in a house set in the ricefields of Ubud.

Welcome to Term 2, 2022. As usual we will be offering our online classes on Tuesday evenings via Zoom and our face to face classes on Thursday evenings in the CBD. If time and access is a consideration, then online is the option for you. If you like the face to face teaching and socialising, then you may want to consider the classes in the CBD. Either way, we can all gather together for a chat at some of the fun social events offered throughout the year.
Online Zoom classes will start on Tuesday 26 April 2022 from 7.00pm - 8.30pm. Introductory, Intermediate 1 & 2 and two Advanced classes will be offered.
Face to Face classes in the CBD will start on Thursday 28 April 2022 from 6.30pm - 8.30pm. Introductory, Intermediate 1 & 2 and the Advanced class will be offered.

AIA MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL
AIA membership is based on a calendar year (Jan - Dec), so now is the time to renew your membership for 2022 if you havent already done so.
The AIA aims to set membership fees at a level which are both affordable but also cover the routine recurring annual costs of running the association. As advised over recent months, the membership fees for 2022 are:
