RĀ KAIMAHI KI WAREA
28 April 2022
Te Kāhui o Taranaki office kaimahi spent the day with our Taiao teams planting harakeke in Warea on Thursday 28 April 2022.  It is always a great opportunity for our kaimahi to get out on our whenua and mahitahi together. The weather was epic and the views of our Taranaki Iwi rohe were breathtaking.

Our Education Coordinator Shane Wallacehoskin (He Taiao, He Taiora, He Tai Tangata) pieced together this video to share with whānau.

TĀTAI TĀNGATA KI TE WHENUA
'Putting the resilience back into kai'
Taranaki Iwi latest innovative initiative has completed it’s first season putting the resilence back into kai. Reconnecting whānau back to Papatūānuku and reinvigorating the art of growing healthy kai.  Tātai Tāngata ki te Whenua has followed the traditions of our tūpuna and was launched in the season of Kōhanga (Spring), this being the most optimal time to set up a maara kai at home.

Our vision is for uri whānau to produce kai that has integrity, and nourishes te taiao, that puts whānau back in charge of kai production to enjoy healthier and happier lives.  At this time, uri participants are giving feedback to help and support future kaupapa.  Eighty uri took part across Aotearoa and Australia with fortnightly zoom online wānanga.

Ngā mihi nui ki a Glen Skipper rāua ko Tuhi-Ao Bailey. Sharing knowledge around kūmara and growing kai for Te Whiti o Rongomai and Tohu Kakahi Parihaka dining tables to manaaki our manuhiri was highlighted by uri.  Ngā mihi nui ki a Shane Cassidy nō te iwi o Te Atiawa. Thank you, Shane, for sharing the step by step how to plant kumara and harvest videos on Tātai Tāngata ki te Whenua facebook page.

For our last wānanga, a zoom hākari was held where uri shared their recipes from kai grown and had the opportunity to share their whakaaro and experiences.

We will also be sharing kōrero about the Tātai Tāngata ki te Whenua kaupapa at the upcoming virtual event – Tiripoua 2022 on Saturday 14 May 2022.

KAIMOANA SURVEY
"Do you engage in any fishing or gathering of Kaimoana in Taranaki?"
At a public meeting on 9 January 2022, it was unanimously agreed to place a Rāhui from Waiwiri Bay (near Arawhata) to Rāhuitoetoe, until 31 July 2022. Interest has now moved this space to include up to the northern boundary of Taranaki Iwi rohe.

We are interested in your thoughts, ideas and ways we can collaborate to ensure our shellfish are protected from excessive harvesting and allow the kai time to regenerate and flourish.

If you engage in any fishing or gathering of kaimoana in Taranaki please take a moment to complete the survey.

TUI DECOMMISSIONING
Update
The Shelf’s Southern Star arrived in Port Taranaki on 22 March 2022.  A virtual blessing ceremony by Taranaki Iwi was held on 24 March 2022 with work commencing in the Tui Field on 28 March 2022.  To date progress has been satisfactory with the diving stage completed safely, and approximately 30% of the offshore work completed.

Phase 2 – Health, Safety Environment
Six safety incidents/near misses were reported by Shelf, one of which was classified as a high potential - crane auxiliary line parted during offloading of 13 tonne gravity base at Port Taranaki.  Gravity base dropped approx 2-3 meters onto the quay.  Riggers who were assisting with landing of the load were well clear and no injuries were sustained.  New Zealand fur seals continue to be regular visitors to the Southern Star – with no other marine mammals sighted. EPA approved the Tui Decommissioning Environmental Monitoring Plan (EMP) on 14 April 2022.

Trainee Marine Mammal Observer - Ruby Hutchieson
Te Kāhui o Taranaki are pleased to advise Ruby Hutchieson has been taken on as our trainee Marine Mammal Observer as part of the Tui Decommissioning project.   Ruby joined the team on 30 April 2022 and will remain until the end of Phase 2.
