Looking Back
This year as we celebrate our 30th anniversary Friends of the Winnipeg Public Library is especially proud of the financial contributions we have made to the Writer-in-Residence program for almost two decades. Some of the authors who have held the writer-in-residence post during that time, like David Bergen, Miriam Toews, and Joan Thomas have achieved great success in the literary world. Friends of the Winnipeg Public Library is so pleased to be part of this valuable initiative which has not only supported the writing careers of many local authors but has also provided instruction and encouragement to literally hundreds of emerging writers over the years. One way to help us continue our support of this worthwhile program is to make a donation to Friends of the Winnipeg Library.

This Year's Writer in Residence
 Anna Leventhal was the Writer-in-Residence for the Winnipeg Public Library for 2021-2022. She consulted with dozens of Manitobans some as young as thirteen, others in their seventies. These writers were working on a fascinating variety of projects including short stories, novels, personal essays, children's books, poetry, and even an opera libretto.
Anna also provided support to writers who wanted information and help with the journey towards publication. She led several online workshops and facilitated a writing circle for a group of twelve. She so admired their curiosity and willingness to explore and was pleased to see them develop a supportive bond with each other. Anna hopes they will continue to meet in the future.
Anna found that many people she talked with had always wanted to pursue creative writing but work and family obligations or a lack of opportunity to learn and practice writing held them back. She tried to assure these emerging writers there were many different paths to becoming an author.
The writer-in-residence program was very valuable to Anna both in terms of making significant progress on her own writing but also in connecting her to a community of other writers. She is most appreciative of her time as a writer-in-residence and grateful for the support that made it possible.

A New Treasurer
 Arvind Pal Singh Matharu is a new addition to the Friends of the Winnipeg Public Library Board. Currently working as a Canadian Immigration Consultant Arvind served for many years as a business analyst. He has degrees in engineering and business administration and loves to travel. His own personal library has thousands of books. Arvind enjoys reading about technology and has authored a book of his own about financial management called Money of the Future. Arvind likes to visit the Millennium Library, where he appreciates the peaceful ambience, the comprehensive collection, and the friendly and helpful staff. Arvind has agreed to accept the position of treasurer for our organization. We welcome Arvind to our board and look forward to working with him.
