April Acts of Remembrance: Each year we light three candles representing the three people killed during the London Nail Bomb attacks (April 1999) and the three communities of Brixton, Brick Lane and Soho united together against hate.

NationalHCAW Newsletter 2022

By Mark Healey

Welcome to issue 05 of our UK Hate Crime Sector Newsletter.

Over the last couple of weekends we have gathered in Brixton and Brick Lane to mark the 23rd anniversaries of the London Nail Bomb attacks on the Black and Asian communities of Lambeth and Tower Hamlets.

"As always, our thoughts are with those we have lost, those who need our ongoing support - we have a renewed determination to spread our message of H.O.P.E. to prevent further attacks from happening again."

On Saturday 30th April 2022 from 5 pm we will gather at the Admiral Duncan in Soho to mark the anniversaries of the Soho Nail Bomb attack targeted towards the Gay (LGBT+) community of Westminster. Do feel welcome to join us.

The end of April means we are now just over 5 months away from delivering the next National Hate Crime Awarenesss Week #NationalHCAW, which falls between Saturday 8th to Saturday 15th October 2022.

We know that hate crime has fallen off the agenda during the last couple of years, we have a Prime Minister that has not provided us with a statement of support since he took office, and a Home Secretary that has not signed a statement of support since October 2019.

Is a statement of support for National Hate Crime Awareness Week too much to ask? We don't believe so - and we invite you to start sending us your statements of support now.

17-24-30 NationalHCAW CIO updates
Administrative Consultant

Starting in May 17-24-30 NationalHCAW has taken on an Administrative Consultant for 6 months to help us review our systems and procedures, the way we research, capture and store information and deliver our projects.

Reference and Resource Folders
We are workingon a project to install two Reference and Resource folders in every library across London. One catering to the UK Hate Crime Sector, the other for the LGBT+ Community. The folders will include an A-Z section, some brief introduction guides and space for copies of partners leaflets/posters to be added.

Freedom of Information Research Project
Five years ago we submitted a Freedom of Information request to every council and police service across the UK to assess that state of the UK Hate Crime Sector - it gave us an amazing picture of what was in place.

We are planning to repeat this again this year.
Brick Lane Act of Remembrance 24th April 2022
Brick Lane Act of Remembrance 2022

We were joined by over 20 people this year - we lit the three candles, Mark said a few words, followed by Trudy Howson (LGBT Poet Laureate) who performed two poems.

We chatted to passers-by  and handed out over 200 hate crime reporting cards and leaflets. One woman stopped to say that she remembered the sound of the bomb exploding when she was a little girl, she lived close by, and it has remained a vivid memory her whole life. Another person said that he had been away for the weekend but received loads of calls from his friends and family to check that he was okay - as he lived only a short distance away.

Every year, without fail we have had someone new come up to us and talk about their experiences of the attacks - it is important that we continue to create the space for people to talk about what happened and share their thoughts. Listening to each others stories is how we connect with each other, and become a closer community.

It is nice to have the support of the local police team (Central East BCU), and the local council (Tower Hamlets Council).
Soho Act of Remembrance 2022

Volunteers from 17-24-30 NationalHCAW will aim to be in Soho from 4 pm onwards so that we can set things up in the gardens and liaise with the local community.

From 5 pm survivors, friends and family will begin gathering at the Admiral Duncan bar on Old Compton Street. Everyone is welcome and it is an opportunity for people to catch up before the Soho Act of Remembrance.

At roughly 6.10 pm we will move onto the street, and walk the short distance from the Admiral Duncan round to St Anne's Gardens, where we will gather in the top corner around the Triangular Bench (which represents the three communities united against hate), and beside the three cherry trees that were planted in memory of Andrea Dykes, John Light and Nick Moore.

The young LGBT people from the Mosaic LGBT Young People's Trust will place flowers by the three candles on the Triangler bench. Mark will say a few words, followed by the Priest from St Anne's Church. We will also have a poem by Terry Morely (representing the Moore family) and a couple more poems by Trudy Howson LGBT Poet Laurette.

We are expecting the Lord Mayor of Westminster Cllr Andrew Smith to be joining us - and he may say a few words.

Unfortunately the Diversity Choir who usually perform every year are unable to do so this year, some of their members will be present - and we thank them for their ongoing support.

Afterwards the Gardens will remain open for a short time for those who wish to pay their respects, they usually close at about 7pm.

30th April 2022 - 5 pm Admiral Duncan, Soho, Westminster.

Admiral Duncan bombing: "It's important to remember this horrendous attack on the LGBTQ+ community."

In a conversation with Philip Baldwin, activist Mark Healey reflects on the 1999 Admiral Duncan bombing and the importance of ‘educating new generations’ to prevent further attacks on the LGBTQ+ community.

The UK Hate Crime Network Group on LInkedIn now has over 400 members across the UK
Have you joined the network?

Founded by Mark Healey in April 2016, the UK Hate Crime Network aims to provide a space on LInkedIn for those who have an interest in tackling hate crime to network, communicate and collaborate together.

Mark wants to create a network which includes members of the Government with responsibility for hate crime, Police Officers from across the UK's Police Services, Council Leaders and Staff, Key Partners from anti-hate crime organisations and people from communities affected by hate crime - so we can work together to help shape and build a UK Hate Crime Sector that eliminates hate and prejudice across the UK.

NB: You will need a LinkedIn profile to apply to join the group.

Will you march with us at Pride on the 2nd July?

We have secured 70 wristbands to particpate in the Pride in London Parade taking place on Saturday 2nd July 2022. This year is a significant year for the Pride movement and the LGBT+ community as we commemorate 50 years since the first Pride took place in the United Kingdom.

We plan to march with the Admiral Duncan Act of Remembrance banner and use our space on the march to raise awareness about our anti-hate crime work. We want to remember those who should be marching with us - but who have had their lives cut short through acts of hatred.

Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis, with Rainbow Boroughs Project members, 17-24-30 NationalHCAW volunteers and the family/friends of those directly affected by the Admiral Duncan nail bomb attack.

18 July 2022 - NationalHCAW Summer Meeting

We are starting to make preparations for our next online Zoom meeting, our Summer meeting which will take place on Monday 18th July 2022.
  • Discussions finalising plans for National Hate Crime Awareness Week 2022
  • Networking opportunities
  • Presentations

NB: Our onlines meetings are aimed at Hate Crime Sector professionals working across the UK, people who work and volunteer for anti-hate crime groups and organisations. We want to create opportunities for networking, communication and collaboration across the sector.

The meetings are not aimed at individuals experiencing hate crime or to provide a forum for cases/casework to be discussed - victims of hate crime should be directed to organisations that take on casework - as listed on the Reporting Hate Crime page on our national website.
