Camden's future changemakers: Sustainers Fest 2022 Round-up!

Camden Council and Think and Do welcomed 77 students from 7 Camden secondary schools to Sustainers Fest on 24 May at Samsung KX.

The afternoon was well and truly jam packed with climate action and the cross-pollination of ideas! After a visioning speech to kick-start creative juices, students eagerly moved into attending 8 zones stationed throughout the Samsung space.

The zones, covering a range of topics and aligned to the Camden School Climate Charter, comprised of a mix of reflective exercises, quizzes, collages, pairing games, sewing, problem solving - and lots of critical thinking!

Students also had the opportunity to immerse themselves in Google's relaxing virtual rainforest setting, before re-joining their school groups to plan how they would deliver a climate assembly on what they had learnt from the afternoon. The event finished with a session on careers in sustainability and the different routes to working in the sector.

When asked about their favourite part of the event, one year 8 student from Hampstead School said 'the fact our ideas can have an impact'.

As part of their climate zone, Parliament Hill students created a 'top tips' guide for delivering climate action and creating impact. Read their key takeaway points here

Thank you to all the students and teachers who attended what was a memorable and inspiring afternoon. With special thanks to Urban Partners, Google and Samsung for making the event possible.

Get involved this National Clean Air Day - 16 June

Thursday 16 June is National Clean Air Day (NCAD) – the UK’s largest air pollution campaign, bringing together schools, communities, businesses to improve public understanding of air pollution and its adverse effects.

Air pollution is the biggest environmental threat to our health, no matter who you are or where you live.

The focus this year is on walking - which has positive benefits for your health and the planet. Simple actions you can take include:

  • Walk or cycle to school and leave the car at home, where you can
  • Choose less polluted walking routes to school
  • Request a Healthy School street
  • Talk to students, parents and the wider community about air pollution and how it effects our health

There are lots of free resources available to engage your school, visit the Clean Air Day website here. Tell us what your school is doing and tag us - @camdenclimate!

Also taking place on Clean Air Day is Camden's 'Acting for Cleaner Air' free event, organised by the Somers Town Future Neighbourhood team, from 2pm-5pm in Somers Town.

Discover how you can help contribute to tackling local air pollution, how to protect yourself whilst out and about, and join a 30-minute walking tour to explore less polluted, alternative routes around Camden.

DfE Sustainability and Climate Strategy: what do the students think?

Department for Education published the Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy in April 2022. The strategy acknowledged the vital role education plays in helping to achieve net zero, whilst setting out policies to help tackle the climate crisis in the education sector.

Environmental change charity Global Action Plan have been involved with the development of the strategy, but are also responsible for hosting the UK Schools Sustainability Network (UKSSN), a regional network made up of groups of students and teachers.

The UKSSN have formulated a response to the strategy, with some headlines listed below:

  • helped to make the case to senior leaders for greater emphasis on sustainability at their schools
  • concerns around how the strategy will address the lack of time for Sustainability Leads to do the work that needs to be done and lack of coverage on climate issues in the curriculum
  • climate issues need to be positioned with all subjects, no just STEM and geography
  • a great first step in the right direction

There's still time to back the Camden Climate Investment

Camden Council launched the Camden Climate Investment as part of our work to take action with our communities on the climate crisis.

Invest to help directly fund local climate projects including new Healthy School Streets, solar panels on public buildings, electric vehicle charging points and replacing the Council’s fleet of diesel and petrol vehicles with green alternatives.

The investment pays 1.75% interest per year fixed, before tax, every six months and repays your original investment after five years. The investment closes on 29 June.

Find out more here.

*Capital at risk. Investments are long term and may not be readily realisable.
