Thames Sewage Update

DEFRA - Bathing Water Status Success!!...

Bathing water status for Port Swimmers at Port MeadowMeadow
Pollution levels at Wolvercote Mill Stream at Port Meadow in Oxford will be monitored by the Environment Agency between 15th May and 30th September each year. It is only the second river in England to receive bathing water status. Claire Robertson from Oxford Rivers Project said "This stretch of river is a regularly used and treasured place for hundreds of people - families, swimmers, kayakers, rowers, anglers, birdwatchers - and a home for many other creatures, and this is the very least it deserves."

it was all over the news!
Guardian
BBC
Telegraph
Times

BUT this does not mean the river gets clean automatically.. it's a massive step but we still need to keep Thames Water to account for all their sewage waste

NO MOW MAY

ECO HOMES

Have you saved energy in your home?
We need your help!

1. Energy-Saving Homes Week
Shout out to residents who have undertaken large or small eco-renovation measures: Would you be willing to  open your home for a few hours in June (in person or virtually)? You'd demonstrate the works you have done, explaining the practical advantages and pitfalls. If so, contact Lois Muddiman at lois.muddiman@energysavinghomes.co.uk

2. Short films about energy-saving
We're looking for interviewees who have installed any of the following:
  1. Low-cost energy-saving measures below £100
  2. Insulated loft, walls or floor + ventilation
  3. Air source heat pump
  4. Solar PV panels and storage
  5. Double/triple glazing

If you can give us a few minutes for an interview, please contact Eleanor Watts at watts.eleanor@yahoo.co.uk as soon as possible.

Project LEO

Thank you if you filled in our Energy survey

The survey is now over : THANK YOU if you did it.. we had over 100 responses, and raised a bunch of money for the youth club (RHJYC) in the process.  If you have any questions, please contact Mim at mim.saxl@lowcarbonhub.org

What is Project LEO? This little film explains the large battery in Rose Hill School, the hydro project at Sandford and the energy trials in the new Rose Hill flats at The Oval.

Good Gym

Be it : helping with litter picking, or tree planting, or digging a pond, making accessible paths, or encouraging people to keep fit... GoodGym have always had environment related tasks and are now keen to take this even further with environment being their main focus and mission statement for 2022.
GG often help with RHILC and other local tasks as well as all over Oxford, if you or someone you know would like to get involved or find out about GoodGym Oxford click Here

Rivermead

Rivermead Nature Reserve

I've been down a few times now and walked the new path which is really coming together. It's a circular walk and doesn't yet link to Iffley church, but it is indeed very nice underfoot and flat and a great place to hear birdsong at this time of year!  It won't stay a secret for long, go have a look!  Many Wild Swimmers are known to use Rivermead also!  Trev

Iain Critchlow from Oxford uni writes :  "I understand from Julian (ODS and delivering the works for the University) that the pathway and fencing works will be finished on 19 April and the area will be accessible from then. The post and rail fence should run from the river to  approximately level with the pond at Rivermead nature reserve where it meets the boundary of the new scheme. The remaining fence will be replaced as part of the redevelopment of the site. Having discussed the woodland works with my colleague Nigel Fisher (Conservator Wytham Woods), whilst the access will be open we will continue with a programme of works in the woods, tidying and improving habitats etc. over the next few months."

Rose Hill and Iffley Low Carbon Tree Matching Service

Thanks to everyone who has replied to Steven.  We are still collecting numbers and this is likely to happen in Autumn

Want a FREE tree for your garden?!

The best and easiest way to increase tree cover is to plant more trees in gardens. Trees bring amazing benefits to all kinds of gardens, provide all year round interest and will attract many beneficial creatures.

As a community group, we are able to access free trees and can provide help and expertise in planting them in the right spots in your garden. We are aware many residents may not have much space so we are focussing on smaller native species.

We need to know how many residents are interested in a free tree being planted in their garden. Please use this form to register your interest.

Equiwatt – Energy talk by Atzin Madrid who is their Product Manager who came to our last RHILC meeting in April 2022 :

Our free app helps UK householders to reduce peak time energy usage and rewards them according to the energy and CO2 that they save.

This climate tech is 'demand side response' on a residential level which supports more effective grid management at peak times of demand. This in turn avoids the use of expensive and polluting peak time energy.

equiwatt have been invited (alongside other technology companies) to take part in trials of grid management that are happening on a local level in Oxfordshire in the coming months. Given the interest in tackling climate change within Rose Hill and Iffley Low Carbon, we thought this may be of interest to your members.

The equiwatt solution connects to electric vehicles that are charged at home so we are keen to reach conscientious EV drivers across Oxfordshire because of the high impact they can have on grid management. You can find out more about that solution here:
