Hello Hazelwood Friends,

This Sunday is Mother’s Day. If you still have a mother or mother-figure alive, I hope you are able to honor her. If you are a mother yourself, I hope your family will be able to honor you.

For many, this is a complicated day, and therefore, it is a day in which we, as The Church, need to be aware of the various reactions to this day – for those who have lost their mothers, for those who long to be mothers, for those who did not/do not have a good relationship with their mothers, to name just a few, it can be a painful day.

Most ministers I know try really hard to be sensitive to the variety of feelings Mother’s Day evokes, as do I. That being the case, this will not be the focus of our service this Sunday, although we will acknowledge it. If you are one for whom this holiday is painful, I am available to chat with you in person or on the phone. I cannot make the pain go away, but sometimes just having someone genuinely listen to you helps to ease it, and I am here for you.

The US celebration of Mother’s Day came about from the efforts of Anna Jarvis who came up with the idea following her own mother’s death in 1905. She intended it to be a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers make for their children. Although she advocated to get it made a national holiday, which occurred in 1914, Jarvis envisioned it to be a family-centered event.

She was quite dismayed at the later commercialization of the holiday. So much so that Jarvis denounced it and worked to get it removed from the national calendar. More interesting information about efforts to honor mothers may be found in this article from history.com: click HERE.

During Lent, we read the verse Isaiah 43:19 that included these words: Look! I’m doing a new thing; now it sprouts up; don’t you recognize it? God is still at work in the world, working to make all things new. During the last four weeks of the Easter season, we will be exploring different ways we may participate in the continuing work that Jesus embodied in his time on earth and in the resurrection, in our series, Making All Things New!

Bass Player and Drummer Needed

One of the many joys I get from my staff position at Hazelwood is working with talented musicians and singers. You may have noticed that the Praise Band is a little smaller now. Our bassist/drummer, Jason Scott, is on a temporary leave of absence. His work schedule has changed to where he cannot be here on Sunday mornings. He's uncertain if this will be a permanent change or not. We miss him and his musical talents, and we hope that he will be able to rejoin us in the future. Until then, we are looking for another bass player and a drummer. If you know anyone who might be interested, please have them contact me at the church.

Youth Ministry Assistant Needed

We are looking for someone to help Hazelwood Christian Church build relationships with the families of our children and youth and carry-out activities and ministries for and with our children and youth, including intergenerational ones. This person will work in cooperation with, and under the supervision of, the Senior Minister, and the exact duties/job description will be mutually agreed upon, based upon the person's interests and abilities and the needs of the congregation.

The time commitment is definitely flexible, as the person's schedule allows and depending on the needs of the congregation. The pay rate is flexible for the right person but will be no less than $15 per hour. Please share this with those you think may be a good fit for our congregation. Interested applicants should submit a letter of interest telling us about themselves and why they are interested in the position, including faith/church background and experiences working with children and youth to hazelwoodchurch@gmail.com.

Calendar

Note: Rev. Pamela is available by cell phone/text, as well as by email. Please do not hesitate to reach out to her as needed. If you do not have her cell number, it is on the weekly paper bulletins, or you may call the church to get it from a receptionist between 9am-3pm, Monday-Thursday and 8am-noon, Friday. Please do not leave messages on her church office voicemail; use her cell phone instead.
