Game Development Program - Code Coven and Facebook Gaming
Applications close May 9th

Facebook Gaming has partnered with Code Coven for a second year to empower novice game developers!

The program:

  • Empowers and supports four teams to build mobile games that they are proud of.

  • Enables cohorts to learn meaningful skills and strategies for game development with a focus on empathetic, ethical, and cooperative perspectives.

  • Develop a toolbox of resources, community, and professional network.

  • Develop know-how for navigating job applications, demoing, and speaking at conferences, starting their studios, or seeking funding for projects.

The course runs from 13th June to 26th August 2022 and is open to under-represented groups within the industry who want to learn to code and aims to enable these early-stage game developers by providing the support they need to create and develop their games from end to end.

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with Facebook Gaming for the second time. The course enables those from marginalised communities to enter and be embraced within the gaming industry. The continued commitment from Facebook Gaming is invaluable to ensuring greater impact and change. We look forward to supporting our new set of cohorts to learn from some of the best and brightest in the industry.” - Tara Mustapha, Founder, and CEO at Code Coven

Career Advice

Welcome to our new section! In this section, we'll be featuring advice from industry professionals each week from a variety of different roles!

This week we're hearing from Christian Burberry, Software Engineer at Unity!

What is your advice on networking?

"Luck is preparation meets opportunity.

Networking is one possible way of getting to find an opportunity, but opportunities are much much more present at places where recruitment efforts are driven. Networking improves your chances of finding opportunities, but many students are inaptly prepared for job applications so they may find their efforts in networking do not yield the results they're expecting.

Be prepared for a job opportunity even before engaging in networking:

  • Prepare your CV and LinkedIn page (for CV templates, view recruiter websites for templates/advice).

  • Learn what kind of tests are required for your discipline, art and code will have tests - and be prepared for them.

  • Make a portfolio (if this applies to your discipline), get it reviewed by professionals at events e.g. EGX

  • Use recruiters, it's their job to get positions and a fair few companies will favourably review applications that come through via recruiters that have been pre-screened.

  • Practice interview techniques, and do mock interviews.

  • Regularly review job boards for companies that you'd want to work at, and apply for jobs through recruiters.

Ultimately, a lot of people you may meet at events may not be actively recruiting (or it is not their interest/role to recruit), even if they work for a given company. The best way to get hired is to be available where the companies are actively looking.

It's not uncommon that people will fail to get a job for being inaptly prepared rather than not having found the right job, right person, etc. Networking is a great tool, but I am of the opinion that most students wouldn't be ready for it or use it effectively enough for it to help them make that jump."
