Voces Novae presents Gender 2.0
May 2 @ Morgenstern’s Books (all ages), 849 S. Auto Mall Road

Join Voces Novae as we explore Gender in a 45-minute choral program that is beautiful, fun, moving, and informative!

Did you know Facebook offers over 50 different gender options for its users? During this performance we will provide the opportunity to reflect on the Four Gender Spectrums -- biological, gender expression, gender identity, gender attraction -- as well as on transgender youth, non-binary/queerness and gender-neutral pronouns, and relationships between parents and their transgender, gay or queer children.

The choir is made up of 16 singers and will perform mostly unaccompanied, with some guitar and ukulele played by the singers. Plus one conductor.

This program is an extension of Voces Novae’s {wildly successful} Gender 101 program in 2015.

African American Choral Ensemble Spring Concert

Saturday, April 30, 2022
7:30 PM – 10:00 PM

Ruth N. Halls Theatre
275 N. Eagleson Avenue

The African American Choral Ensemble will present the world premiere of Dr. Raymond Wise's Gospel Mass. For centuries, the world's great composers have set the Ordinary of the Mass in a wide variety of styles, from classical to jazz. Wise joins the ranks by setting the mass in various contemporary African American gospel musical styles. The work includes settings of the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, Agnus Dei, and ends with a 16-fold Amen. Together these musical works will provide a soulful and inspirational experience.

The Emmy Award-winning African American Choral Ensemble preserves the legacy of African American choral music through transformative interpretations of this unique American art form. Founded in 1975, the Choral Ensemble features a broad repertoire including spirituals, folk forms, traditional and contemporary gospel music, and formally composed works by African American composers.

The African American Choral Ensemble is a course offered for academic credit through the Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies instructed by Dr. Raymond Wise, and it is a unit of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs at Indiana University.

Milking and Scratching: The Handmade Films of Naomi Uman
ThursApril 28, From78:00 pm
Free, but ticketed event

This program features four short films from Naomi Uman, whose experimental style utilizes unique hand-manipulation techniques. In Removed, Uman uses nail varnish to eliminate the female form from a strip of 1970s pornography. Private Movie takes an abstract approach to the love story, presenting a gorgeously monochrome sense of place. In Hand Eye Coordination, hand-scratched film and a jarring industrial score make for a provocative approach to the close-up. Uman takes a different approach with Leche, a beautiful black-and-white documentary about a Mexican farm.

In a small town, a shy and isolated teenage girl (Anna Cobb in a stunning feature debut) becomes immersed in an online role-playing game. Critically acclaimed, this film is an intimate teenage journey of self identity in the digital age.
