"MARK YOUR CALENDAR:

Wednesday May 4 - FCA Planning & Zoning Committee meets at 7 pm via Google Meet. For more information contact brinker@fca-fac.ca.

Also on May 4 - the Ontario election begins! Voting day is June 2. The FCA has put together a fact sheet "Land Use Planning is a provincial election issue" (click for fact sheet). Community associations may want to raise with candidates the issue of arbitrary provincial interference in local planning issues without notice, public participation, or accountability.

Wednesday May 18 - FCA General Meeting @ 7pm via Google Meet. Main topics: Update on City Community Safety & Well-Being Plan, FCA position on Community Partner Insurance Program. The agenda will be posted on the FCA web site (fca-fac.ca) later this month.

2.  At the May 3 meeting of the City's Finance & Economic Development Committee (FEDCO) (agenda item 5) the FCA will be asking for a one-month deferral of the report on the City's Community Partner Insurance Program (go to meeting agenda on the city website) as there has not been enough notice to enable community groups to review this important report covering insurance for community activities. If successful, the FCA Working Group on Community Insurance will review the City report and make recommendations at the May 18 FCA General Meeting for the June FEDCO meeting.

3.  Also at the May 3 FEDCO meeting (agenda item 1) is a staff report on how to handle the Ottawa Hospital's request for $150 million City contribution to its re-construction project (go to meeting agenda on the city website). City staff are recommending taking the time to develop options on how this could be done for the newly-elected Council to decide. This makes the matter a municipal election issue.

4.  However, the City is taking a different tack on the Lansdowne 2.0 proposal from Ottawa Sports & Entertainment Group (a private, for profit sports enterprise that currently runs the stadium & arena at Lansdowne). At a special meeting of FEDCO on Friday May 6 (sole agenda item) staff are recommending proceeding with a $330 million re-development that would re-build the northside stands, relocate the Civic Centre, and permit 3 new apartment towers housing 1,200 units (go to meeting agenda on the city website). The FCA Board is concerned about the lack of public consultation on this mega-project.

5.   The FCA Working Group on Committee of Adjustment is holding a workshop: Best Practices at the Committee of Adjustment, on Thursday May 26 at 7 pm via Google Meet (see poster). Representatives from Ottawa's Committee of Adjustment will be speaking, plus a panel of community members experienced in Committee of Adjustment hearings. A subsequent workshop on Committee of Adjustment issues will be held this fall.

6.   The FCA Board has set the date for the FCA Annual General Meeting for Wednesday June 15, at 7 pm via Google Meet. Nominations are being sought for the FCA City Builder Award, FCA Achievement Award, and FCA Community Media Award. Anyone interested in serving on the FCA Board of Directors should send an e-mail to nominations@fca-fac.ca
