Covid Lockdowns Relaxing In Guangzhou & Shenzhen, As Shanghai Struggles
Source:  Lighting Solution Development Newsletter / David Shiller

Lockdowns in two major Chinese manufacturing cities have begun relaxing, in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, last week. Two weeks ago, Guangzhou became the latest major manufacturing city to lock down schools and travel, with fears that the lockdowns could spread to the manufacturing sector. However, last week, case numbers fell for several consecutive days in both Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

New Shenzhen symptomatic cases dropped to zero for some days last week. Shenzhen saw a large number of cases imported from Hong Kong, accounting for 19 of the 21. The remaining two imported cases both came from Japan.

In response to the falling number of Guangzhou cases, several previously locked-down areas in Baiyun, Panyu, Yuexiu and Haizhu districts have been lifted. Many schools in Guangzhou have resumed in-person teaching and Foshan announced that people can now leave the city without needing a negative nucleic acid test issued within 48 hours.

For Shanghai, though, case numbers are dropping slowly, keeping the city in a terrible lockdown for more than a month. Shanghai reported 24,820 cases on April 17th and 17,468 cases on April 22nd. My own friend in Shanghai reports that food shortages are becoming a significant problem for the poor and migrant workers.

DS: More installed smart home products become worthless “bricks,” as IoT companies fail.

Lighting Controls Become Bricks as Smart Home Company Disappears
Source: inside.lighting

It’s frustrating when a lighting product fails. Users have to diagnose the issue and possibly purchase replacement parts, or perhaps a replacement fixture or two.

But what happens when the lighting failure is not simply an isolated bad driver or a broken trim? What happens when an entire system of lighting products simultaneously goes defunct because the smart lighting manufacturer and gatekeeper to its cloud servers just disappears without notice?

That’s exactly what happened to an estimated 1 million+ installations of smart home products from Insteon. According to multiple reports, the company’s smart home products stopped working, leaving users with broken smart home setups. And company executives have reportedly scrubbed their LinkedIn profiles, too.

DS: Recycled rice husks create the first silicon quantum dot LED light.

World’s First LED Lights Developed from Rice Husks
Source: Lab Manager / Hiroshima University

Milling rice to separate the grain from the husks produces about 100 million tons of rice husk waste globally each year. Scientists searching for a scalable method to fabricate quantum dots have developed a way to recycle rice husks to create the first silicon quantum dot (QD) LED light. Their new method transforms agricultural waste into state-of-the-art light-emitting diodes in a low-cost, environmentally friendly way.

The research team from the Natural Science Center for Basic Research and Development, Hiroshima University, published their findings on January 28, 2022, in the American Chemical Society journal ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering.

DLC Releases New Logos for Each QPL Impacting Product Marketing Materials
Source: LightNow / David Shiller

The DesignLights Consortium (DLC) has released four new logos, allowing manufacturers and distributors to indicate which products are listed on each of the four DLC Qualified Product Lists (QPLs). The four updated logos are designed for use with products approved for the DLC’s Solid-State Lighting (SSL) and Networked Lighting Controls (NLC), Horticultural Lighting and LUNA qualified products lists (QPL). Effective April 21, 2022, these logos are valid to indicate qualification on the DLC QPLs.

The DLC encourages all manufacturers with listed products to update their marketing materials with the new logos, which can be found on the DLC Marketing Toolkit webpage. For proper use of the logos, refer to the Logo Use Quick Guide and the full Logo and Trademark Use Guidelines.

The DLC does not expect manufacturers to immediately update older materials but encourages updating as soon as is feasible. For the time being, old QPL logos are still valid to identify DLC qualified products, and QPL users should note that they may still see the old logos used to indicate qualification. The DLC recommends that users looking for qualified products always verify listing on the individual QPLs. If you have questions about the new logos or updating your marketing materials, contact DLC at info@designlights.org.
