Sensory room a safe space for Yacolt Primary students

What was once a storage space between two classrooms at Yacolt Primary School is now filled with soft blue lighting, a sound machine set to ocean waves, a swing, and other tools meant to soothe and calm. Students who are experiencing sensory or behavioral challenges are invited to the room to take advantage of a few minutes of quiet and peace in order to regain focus before they return to the classroom and continue learning in a safe and productive way.

Nadia Noid, an occupational therapist in the district, says she got the idea for the sensory room from peers in other districts who found them to be beneficial for students with sensory or behavioral challenges. Yacolt Principal Lynnell Murray quickly embraced the plan and helped to find a space that would work.

Check out the BG Cast Podcast

David Lindner, a member of the district's Citizens Advisory Committee, is partnering with Battle Ground Public Schools to produce BG CAST, a podcast seeking to bring the voices of the community and Battle Ground schools together. Each week, David will be joined by Superintendent Denny Waters and a multitude of guests, from principals and PTA leaders to students and community members. They'll talk about the many things that make the district and our community great and shine a spotlight on some of the hidden treasures you may not know about. CASEE students plant trees near Mount St. Helens

Students from the CASEE program at Battle Ground Public Schools joined the Lower Columbia Fish Enhancement Group on Earth Day to plant 1,000 trees at a park once decimated by the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. The plants have been stored on part of the CASEE campus awaiting transport to the area along the Toutle River. Once grown, they will help to restore salmon habitat along the river. To learn more about the work of LCFEG and the CASEE students, read an article about the day trip in The Daily News of Longview.

BGPS’ Board of Directors conducted a regular board meeting on Monday, April 25. Highlights are in this week's BG Board, Briefly. Archived video of board meetings is available on the district website. The next regular board meeting will be held on May 9 at 6:00 p.m.

Maple Grove Primary student headed to national Future Chefs competition

Maple Grove Primary 3rd grader Miradi Ackler with her parents Heather and Benjamin

Maple Grove Primary 3rd grader Miradi Ackler received a special surprise this week. Her Fancy Nancy Bacon Balsamic Grilled Cheese recipe was chosen out of thousands of entries from across the country to be one of five finalists for Sodexo's national Future Chefs competition. The nine year old recently won first place in the district Future Chefs competition held at Prairie High School. The community will have a chance to vote for Miradi's creation, so watch for details on that soon through the district's Facebook and Twitter accounts. Sodexo will also be adding Miradi's culinary creation to the menu at her school for one day only sometime in the near future. Congratulations, Miradi!
