Notes from the Secretary
I am happy to announce that our June meeting will be held in person at the Siminoff Masonic Center. It has been a long time coming but, finally it is true. It is time to break out the ritual book and become reacquainted with the ritual belonging to your officer station. This will enable all of us to open and close all three orders with our beautiful ritualistic ceremony. This applies to everyone because none of us kept proficient in our work during this long period of Pandemic.
If you have not made your reservations for Grand Sessions, it not too late to make them. We have not had the opportunity in the past two years to rekindle York Rite Friendships and this is the time to do just that. Our Grand Sessions are scheduled for May 15-18. Grand Royal Arch will meet on Monday May 16, Grand Council meets on Tuesday May 17, and Grand Commandery meets Wednesday, May 18.
Saturday, April 23, was a very successful day for York Rite Masonry at the Siminoff Masonic Center. Siminoff Daylight Chapter No. 163 hosted a conferral ceremony for the Mark Master and Past Master Degrees. Three new members for Siminoff No. 163, 3 for Howard Chapter No. 14, and 1 new member for Salinas Chapter No. 59. Our candidates enjoyed a very good degree presentation.
Planning has already begun for a conferral in July of the Most Excellent Master and Royal Arch Degrees. More information will follow soon as we firm up the date.

Mark Master Degree
The rejection and discarding of stones, at least, can be physically shown to have existed with olden masons.
In Germany a custom is recorded, where if a stone was spoiled, the stone mason was punched and the stone ceremoniously carried to a ‘charnel house’. Just such a depository, 3.5 metres in depth, has been found near Regensburg Cathedral, Bavaria, which was built 1275-1530.
The Operatives had seven degrees. Two of these, Fitter and Marker, and Setter and Erector, equate to the two Mark degrees usually found in early speculative lodges, Mark Man and Mark Master. The Mark Man was associated with Fellow Crafts and Mark Master with Masters. The Mark Master Mason Degree is thought to have originated as a ceremony of registering a craftsman’s mark in his lodge of operative stonemasons.
Its legend revolves around the completion of the Temple of Solomon and the placement of the keystone in the Royal Arch. The symbol of the degree is a keystone on which are engraved certain mystic letters, the collective meaning of which is explained in the ceremony.
In Scotland the famous Mother Kilwinning Lodge has a 20 December 1674 record of a John Smith being admitted and paying for his mark. From about the start of the 1760’s it is ‘evident’ that Scotland had two Mark ceremonies, Mark Man for the Fellow Craft, and Mark Master for Master.
In Ireland a 1688 record lists every Freemason there who received his mark. In the late 1700’s ‘Arch’ and ‘Royal Arch’ degrees in Ireland were quite different. The Arch was a form of early Mark, into which title the name eventually evolved.
In England a major Mark event occurred on 1 September 1769 when Thomas Dunckerley (1724-1795), an illegitimate son of George II, brought a fully fledged two degree Mark system to Portsmouth, on the southern English coast. These were Mark Man and Mark Mason - or Master. It is almost certain that Dunckerley obtained these degrees from the Inniskilling Dragoon’s lodge. Most of the Royal Arch Chapter of Friendship were Irishmen. It held an Antient’s warrant, and one from York. Dunckerley delivered the two Mark degrees to the Chapter. Both the Lodge and he were Moderns, but they were liberally minded.
In the United States the earliest record of the Mark Degree is 1783 at the Royal Arch Chapter in Middleton, Connecticut. Soon the Mark was adopted by Royal Arch Chapters as the first in their sequence of degrees. The Mark Master Mason degree entered the American (York) Rite largely through the efforts of Thomas Smith Webb (1771-1819), and his ‘Monitor’ published in 1797.
My Mark is shown above.

Principal Conductor of the Work
Bruce Rick
Companions,
Corresponding to the Junior Warden in the Blue Lodge, the Principal Conductor of the Work sits to the left of the Illustrious Master in the East.
Just as in the Blue Lodge, the third-in-command represents Hiram Abiff, the Chief Architect of King Solomon's Temple.
It is interesting to note that while the Blue Lodge Third Degree ceremony centers on Hiram Abiff, the candidate has very little interaction with this character while, in the Cryptic Degrees, Hiram Abiff plays a central role in the conferral by giving a very moving soliloquy. The title indicates the chief or most important guide for the physical labor and construction of an edifice. Principal comes from the Latin word "principalis" which translates to "first in importance or original." The word "conductor is rooted in the Latin word "conductor" meaning "one who hires or leads." Work stems from the Old English word "weorc" meaning "something done."
The jewel of the Principal Conductor of the Work is a Plumb and a trowel within a hollow triangular medal that is suspended from a purple collar or lanyard.

Knights Templar - Sword Sling and Sword Baldric
Sir Knights,
There are two ways to wear the sword, depending on your Uniform. The Sword Sling – uses the belt as a mounting point.
It is used with the Dress Uniform. The attachment hooks are fed through and poke out of the sword slit in your Uniform Coat.
The Sword Baldric - goes over your right shoulder and across your body. Baldrics may used with the either the Dress or the Cap and Mantle Uniform. I prefer the Sword Baldric below right.

Mothers Day!
May 8th
Did you know...
Mother's Day received official recognition only after Anna Jarvis organized a series of Mother’s Day Work Clubs. The first Mother’s Day was celebrated in Grafton, West Virginia, on May 10, 1908, in the church where Jarvis’s mother had taught Sunday School. (Grafton is the home to the International Mother’s Day Shrine.)

Armed Forces - Currently Serving - Day!
May 21st
Did you know...
Less than 28% of Americans between the ages of 17-23 are qualified for military service, that's only about 1-in-4.
The U.S. Army was in charge of exploring and mapping America. The Lewis and Clark Expedition was an all-Army affair. Army officers were the first Americans to see such landmarks as Pike's Peak and the Grand Canyon.

Memorial Day!
May 30th
Did you know...
Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day because it was believed that flowers would be a prominent part of the ceremonies in honor of the war dead.
Today, flags are often used instead.
