- Upcoming D-Lab Summer Closure -

With the end of the semester rapidly approaching, we want to let you know about the plan for D-Lab summer closures.

Starting Friday, May 6 @ 5:00pm, D-Lab will be closed to the public (virtual space, front desk, workshops, new consulting requests, and consulting drop-ins). If you have an open consulting request, we will finish up your existing request from May 6 to May 13 via email or schedule individual Zoom sessions.

We plan to re-open our doors and begin providing services when fall semester begins in August 2022. Our re-opening date is still to be determined, but we will let you all know our plan as we get closer to
early August.

Our newsletter updates over the summer will change from our regular weekly updates instead to occasional updates as we have information to share.

Good luck with finals and we hope everyone has a great rest of the semester! If you have questions, please email: dlab-frontdesk@berkeley.edu

D-Lab is hiring a Postdoc
UC Berkeley Undergraduate Data Science at Scale program

The program aims to implement, scale, and propagate a novel prototype for undergraduate data science education. The project is led by a multidisciplinary group of faculty and staff who collectively bring deep expertise in undergraduate STEM education, data science pedagogy, and the science of diversity and inclusion in higher education.

Through a continuous cycle of design, implementation, evaluation, and refinement, the project advances the field of undergraduate data science education by producing a set of open source curricular materials, developing technical infrastructure, and disseminating the new knowledge necessary to deploy such resources successfully in multiple and diverse institutional settings. Ultimately, we will engage a wide community in the process of institutional transformation.

Public Talk: Teaching Bias through Word Embeddings
May 16 | 9am-10am | Register here
Speaker: Tom van Nuenen

This talk discusses findings from the Discovering and Attesting Digital Discrimination project at the Department of Informatics, King’s College London.

In this project, which focuses on biases in Machine Learning, we proposed a data-driven approach to discover language biases encoded in the vocabulary of discourse communities on social media. In our approach, we use word embeddings to connect protected attributes to evaluative words found in different language datasets, discovering gender, religion, and ethnic biases... read more.
