Sisters of the Brush at the Art Gallery of St. George's Episcopal Church | on display through May 31
Paintings by the group Sisters of the Brush will be on exhibit in the Art Gallery of St. George’s Episcopal Church from May 2 through May 31, 2022. The Sisters of the Brush are four women painters: Phyllis Boger, Ann Brown Thomason, Barrie Skoda Foster and Jana Jones, each with different styles and techniques. Their love of painting has brought them together to exhibit their art through the bond of the paintbrush.
Boger has been painting on silk for over three decades. The silk paintings for this exhibition are collages made from dyed pieces of silk and found sari cloth. Jones is a nurse and native Memphian who uses watercolors and oil pastels to escape from the daily stresses of life through her art. Foster began painting in watercolor but now likes to paint in all mediums. She especially loves to paint en plein air. Thomason is a retired physician who loves to paint waterscapes, landscapes, sky and portraiture in both oil and acrylic. Much of her inspiration comes from the Forgotten Coast in Florida.
Meet the artists at a special coffee hour with light refreshments after church on Sunday, May 15 at 12:00 p.m.
The Art Gallery of St. George's Episcopal Church (2425 S Germantown Rd; 901-754-7282) is open to the public M – F from 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal School Seeking Historical Memorabilia
Founded in 1947 as an outreach of Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, school seeks artifacts from its early days in advance of 75th anniversary.
Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal School celebrates the 75th anniversary of its founding in Memphis this year. The coed Midtown school got its start in Central Gardens in 1947 as an outreach of Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, which itself had just been created upon the merger of the Grace Church and St. Luke’s Church parishes in 1940. The school’s founder, Lorena Webber Walker, had previously run a kindergarten at St. Mary’s Episcopal School. In 1947 she approached the Rev. Dr. Charles Stuart Hale, the second rector of the newly-merged Grace-St. Luke’s, to ask if she could rent space at the church to begin operating a kindergarten there. A scholarly man himself and firm believer in the importance of a Christian education, he agreed, and Mrs. Walker set to work.
Her efforts paid off. From humble beginnings in the church’s Parish Hall, a thriving day school was formed, which gradually added grades each year, eventually graduating several high school classes in the mid-1970s. Space constraints led the school to right-size into a prekindergarten through ninth grade configuration in the late ‘70s, ultimately evolving into the two-year-old to eighth grade model the school enjoys today.
As part of our celebration planning efforts, we are seeking historic memorabilia, especially from the 1947-1977 time frame, for possible display. If you or someone you know attended GSL during this time and would like to donate early GSL yearbooks, photos, or other artifacts to the school’s archives, please contact Associate Director of Communications Marci Woodmansee at 901-278-0200 or mwoodmansee@gslschool.org today.
