Long Tent Opening Ceremony kicks off a week-long series of immersive educational events

The Long Tent, a collaboration with the CTUIR months in the making, concluded its time on Ankeny Field last Sunday. Its organizers hope the Whitman community integrates more Indigenous representation into the campus community and curriculum. "It's nice that this campus can continue to educate at such a grand scale, but there is a lack of representation for Indigenous peoples, not just in students but in the studies [offered at Whitman]," Lonnie Sammaripa, a member of the Yakima Indian community, said. Ansley Peard reports on the Long Tent's Opening Ceremony

  • Other news this week:

    • Whitman African Students' Association hosted Taste of Africa on Saturday. Its organizers saw it as a way to bring African culture to Whitman and create community for international students, Sara Marshall reports

OPINION
Don't say gay? Or don't say transgender?

Alanna Sherman discusses Florida's "Don't say gay" bill, and argues that ignoring LGBTQ identities is harmful to community mental health.

"Supporters of the bill believe it would give parents greater control over when and in what way topics such as gender and sexuality are introduced to their children. The bill also protects children from what supporters term, “ideological indoctrination,” a misnomer that incorrectly attributes gender and sexual orientation to ideology," Sherman writes.

"However, if we were really concerned about children’s access to self-expression, then wouldn’t we be absolutely horrified by the excessive visibility of cisgender heterosexuality in mainstream children’s media?"

Kehillat Shalom hosts annual Passover Seder celebration

“I had a really positive experience at the Passover Seder this year. The Seder reminded me a lot of celebrating Passover at home but also incorporated traditions that were new to me,” sophomore Shawn Vinogradsky said. “I also really enjoyed the fact that there were a lot of people who were unfamiliar with the Passover Seder but came to learn and celebrate with us.”

On April 19, Kehillat Shalom celebrated the annual Passover Seder in a traditional gathering open to all Whitman students, Charlotte Elliott writes.

The boy in the box

Senior Justin Ferland stood in front of the library for 64 hours straight last week, entombed in Plexiglass. Safe to say, he had the campus community enraptured.

"Justin Ferland didn’t expect people to care so much," Emma Foley writes. "Yet on Friday night, he found himself in front of an electric crowd—at least a hundred strong—huddled by the library for what junior Willie Schack called 'the event of the year.'”

Plant mom arrested for triple plantslaughter

"New details are emerging surrounding the case of the local woman who has been charged with killing her three children. The bodies of six-year-old succulent, three-year-olds snake plant, and 9-month-old pothos plant were found in the dumpster behind the woman’s apartment complex," Lee Thomas reports. "She had adopted all three just two months ago at one of those bougie, minimalist, indie plant stores you can find in any city’s gentrified district for a reportedly exorbitant price."
