STAND WITH UKRAINE FILM FESTIVAL We hope you will join us this weekend when we conclude our festival of Ukrainian films (6 rarely seen feature films and one program of shorts). Admission is free and donations will be accepted. All proceeds will go to Ukrainian humanitarian aid organizations. Here’s a link with more information about the festival, including descriptions of each film, a list of aid organizations and a night-by-night schedule.

April/May Issue of The Ryder

Our April/May issue is on the stands. You can pick up a copy on campus or at one of 250 locally owned shops and restaurants in Bloomington. Or, you can click on the cover image above to read the issue on your laptop.

This issue of The Ryder is dedicated to Ukraine and the ongoing fight for democracy, freedom, and humanity. It features a collection of stories about the history, culture and people of Ukraine, beginning with a profile of Volodymyr Zelensky and his unlikely rise from TV sitcom star to the “people's president.” An interview follows with a married couple in hiding in Kharkiv, Ukraine while shelling occurs outside their home; then a second interview with a refugee relief organization that is working to provide aid for Ukrainians seeking safety in Moldova and Romania.

There’s more. A historian writes about the years of conflict between Russia and Ukraine, while a translator breaks down the lyrics of “Ukrainian Fury.” There are also profiles of a new cast of “super folk heroes” who are supplying hope to Ukraine; and lastly, reflections from a traveler who found love and jazz in the streets of Ukraine.

Special thanks to Iryna Stasiuk, whose illustrations enhance these stories, as well as to all of the writers contributed to this section.

Slava Ukraini! Glory to Ukraine!

A reminder: The Ryder is distributed free of charge and supported in part by advertising. As you flip through this issue, if you should find a story that you like, or if you just want to support original, independent journalism that is locally produced (actually, this month we can say “globally produced”) please consider making a contribution.
