Expand your public engagement potential with our masterclasses

What is public engagement, why is it important, and how do you know if your public engagement activities are successful? Our masterclasses will help you build on your public engagement goals to deliver enjoyable and meaningful activities for you and your participants.

We have two core masterclasses coming up very soon for staff members with little or no prior experience of public engagement looking to expand their understanding and get involved.

In addition to these, we are also running five optional masterclasses for staff. These sessions build on the context and background of the core masterclasses, enabling you to broaden your skills and put your learning into practice. Please note you must complete the core masterclasses (or have equivalent experience) before attending these additional classes.

The full schedule is as follows:

  • Thursday 5 May

Thank you to everyone who attended Engagement Day 2022

Our annual Engagement Day returned to South Kensington yesterday for an event dedicated to showcasing the latest developments in the world of engagement.

Following the theme Engagement Forward, attendees heard from Emily Morrison, Head of the Institute for Community Studies, as well as other invited speakers from the Co-Production Collective, UCL, and across Imperial.

The day was a fantastic showcase of the benefits of participatory research and explored how to build trusted relationships with the public to develop effective research strategies.

We'd like to thank everyone who attended the event for their time and contributions to the day. We hope you enjoyed Engagement Day 2022 and feel more confident to take a participatory research approach in your own public engagement.

If you attended, please complete our evaluation survey for the day. Your comments and suggestions will help us to better understand the value of events like this and what improvements we can make for the future.

Fund your Public Engagement project with the Grantham Institute

Seed funding is available from the Grantham Institute to aid researchers and students in developing ambitious activities for public engagement in 2021-22, including for large events like the Great Exhibition Road Festival

The Institute will award up to £1000 for up to three proposals that engage an audience with the Institute’s vision for creating a sustainable, resilient, zero-carbon society.

Successful proposals will create an activity that explores how people think, feel or behave, and relate their experience to a research topic that falls within the Grantham Institute remit. They can be challenging, but not necessarily didactic.

Proposals will ideally involve people from across disciplines at the College, and may include external collaborators such as from the arts, literature, performance, sports, social sciences, psychology, etc.

Leadership programme for local women celebrates its third year of success

Agents of Change, a unique place-based community leadership programme and network for local women, is continuing to grow from strength to strength with the support of Imperial College London’s local partners: Hammersmith United CharitiesHammersmith and Fulham Council, and The Lyric.

Recently, friends, family, local people, and organisations came together to celebrate the 12 women graduating from the programme’s third cohort, each with their own inspirational stories and ambitions. The evening was spent celebrating them and their dedication to empowering themselves and their communities.

The evening was hosted by Farial Missi, Community Engagement Manager at Imperial, who was on the first leadership programme in 2018-19.

As an Agent, she noted that it was a full circle moment being on the other side, celebrating her new fellow Agents and the growing network of "incredible local women that recognise, celebrate and support one another to better themselves and their communities".
