Hello and welcome!

You might be wondering why I've chosen this image for the newsletter this week.  Well apart from the magnificence of the sight of UK bluebells at this time of year, it made me think about the fantastic work being done in the rail sector to promote and encourage wildlife and biodiversity.

We hear a lot about the work organisations such as Network Rail and HS2 to do in this area, but it is so encouraging to see what is being done eleswhere in the sector.  Take the Community Rail Network (CRN) for example (which I think I have mentioned before) - but if you missed the report produced by the CRN with support from Rail Delivery Group (RDG), here it is again ‘Community rail and biodiversity,’. It highlights how community-based partnerships and groups, working with the rail industry, are delivering wide-ranging wildlife-related projects.  Well worth a read.  It's also a delight to welcome ECUS to the RBD Community a business built around preserving and promoting ecology and sustainability.

“Don’t let good ideas fall at the last hurdle” – RIA publishes rail innovation strategy The paper, A Railway Innovation Strategy, looks at the state of innovation and R&D in the sector and the barriers to getting new products and services into the railways. It stresses that further collaboration to help businesses get new ideas to market more rapidly, and a culture of innovation, will be key under GBR to make the industry more cost-efficient, sustainable and accessible to passengers.

Enjoy the long weekend when it arrives (if you are lucky enough to have the day off!).  We are really looking forward to our Rail Safety & Infrastructure event on Tuesday at the University of Birmingham - if you are attending - we look forward to seeing you there!  Our next event will be on SMART Maintenance and Depots.  More details next week!
