UMA WEEKLY UPDATE
April 29, 2022

Call to Action
Minnesota has a severe and persistent shortage of teachers of color and American Indian teachers. This is a major contributing factor to why the state continues to have one of the nation's worst education gaps. Seeking to bridge this gap, the Increase Teachers of Color Act (ITCA) aims to attract, prepare and retain more teachers of color and American Indian teachers.

You can help support ITCA by contacting the Chair of the Senate Education Finance and Policy Committee, Senator Roger Chamberlain (District 38), using the automatic generated email below. If you live/work in Senator Chamberlain’s District 38 (Lexington, Blaine, Lino Lakes, Circle Pine, Centerville, North Oaks, White Bear Township, White Bear Lake, Dellwood, and Hugo) please click here to generate a message to Sen. Chamberlain. You just have to add your city and name at the bottom of the email, and click the send button.

If you don’t live/work in Senator Chamberlain’s district, please click here, add your name, and click send. You can also support this bill by sharing this email with 5 other people. Please send between now and May 6.

UMA Courtyard ROMP - May 20!
Save the date - UMA’s first ROMP is in the process of being planned. Volunteers and interested parties are encouraged to join us as we create a fun filled, inclusive of all,  community building event. The ROMP will be on May 20 with the tentative time frame being 3:00-6:30 PM.
What's Happening at School

6th graders are having fun assemblying Lego components to make a robotic vehicle. Once the vehicle is ready, students put together a sequence of coding that directs the robotic vehicle around an outline on the floor.  Working with a robot kit is a way of improving creative thinking, problem-solving, and computer programming skills.  UMA students will use more advanced robotic kits by Arduino in 8th grade and high school.

The Breakfast Club, a classic movie from 1985 is providing discussion topics for high school students in the Sociology class taught by Mr. Kevin Coughlin. The central message of the film centers on friendship across peer groups and how this impacts our own social identity and inner psyche.  With popcorn and breakfast cereal to snack on, students will use the film to learn more about social structure, social action, power, culture, social interaction, roles, role set/strain/conflict/exit, the Looking-Glass Self theory, the stages of the life course, adolescence, deviance,  and the labeling theory.  The movie can be found on Amazon & Apple TV!
