Our most vulnerable kittens are carefully watched over by dedicated fosters around the clock.

Neonatal Kittens

One of the hardest jobs at Thundering Paws is caring for neonatal kittens, kittens who for one reason or another lost their mom immediately after birth. We’ve had a litter of six and another litter of three so far this year.

These kittens require an amazing commitment of time. They must be fed every two hours around the clock for about six days, then it’s every three hours for a few more days. After they have opened their eyes around ten days old, the time between feedings can stretch a bit. That’s a lot to ask.

However, the hardest thing about neonates is their vulnerability. Without benefit of enough colostrum from their mother, these kittens often do not survive the first week. Out of the litter of six, even with ‘round the clock feedings and care, we lost four. One kitten in the litter of three perished. They all had fosters with lots of love and experience, yet they just couldn’t make it.

What I have to remind people, including myself, about in these sad times is that these kittens were fed, loved and cared for all of their lives. They didn’t live as long as we would have liked. However, isn’t that what we all want, to be loved all our lives?

The four remaining kittens, two from each litter, are with a veterinarian who is recovering from surgery, so she is at home with time to provide kitten care. We have high hopes for them.

Egg and Bunny, rescued from the dumpster where they were born 4/13, opened their eyes a few days ago. Jack Jack and Hans, born 4/18, are just now opening their eyes. The first thing these kittens see is a human who is feeding and loving them. If you might want a kitten in late July, consider these babies. Kittens raised by humans are the sweetest ones.

Become a Foster!

Thank You, Doreen!

Our foster program succeeds with donations of all types, from monetary to equipment and supplies.
A dear donor bought us everything we asked for on the last Mewsings. Our Foster Advocate, Tanya, now has a well-stocked medical foster room.

We are so grateful for all of you who are out there reading this newsletter and responding to our pleas.

Veterinarians

We are fortunate to have wonderful health care providers working with us.
It takes a true passion to devote your life to animal health. The journey begins in high school where the would-be vet must make top grades to get into a good college. Veterinarians don’t spend their college years partying! Getting into vet school is harder than getting into medical school.

With twelve years of hard work behind her, the veterinary hopeful’s studies have just begun when she rejoices over the letter of acceptance from her preferred school of veterinary science. Now she must learn the anatomy and physiology of many species, and how best to help each.

When she graduates, she has just as many student loans to pay back as a medical doctor, but without the hope of making a large salary. Please consider this before you next complain of the high cost of caring for your pets!

We are fortunate to have wonderful health care providers working with us. Each one we know has gone not just the extra mile, more like the extra ten miles in helping our kitties. It’s not unusual to have one of our vets call long after hours; to take a cat or kitten home to observe overnight; to perform surgeries which, if performed on a human, would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Thank you, veterinarians, for the lives you’ve saved and the suffering you have alleviated.

Beerburg!

Come to our 21st birthday party on June 4th from 1 to 4 at Beerburg, 13476 Fitzhugh Rd, Austin, TX 78736. Bring your phone so you can show everyone your pet pictures. Drink beer and eat their great food. We’ll have vendors and a silent auction. Beerburg has an inside area in which it’s easy to social distance, and a great outdoors overlooking a beautiful hill country view.

As the founder of Thundering Paws, I would have scoffed had anyone told me in 2001 that we would survive—that we would NEED to survive—21 years! With the help of our supporters, Thundering Paws is committed to remain on the job until this work is done.

Thank you for all you do for us and for animals!
