Before my career in literary arts administration, I worked in HIV/AIDS prevention education and social services. I worked with AIDS organizations in Washington, DC, San Francisco, and Minneapolis from 1984 to 1994, through the height of the crisis. What helped me get through those difficult times was writing.
I know first-hand how writing helps manage the stress and grief that is part of the daily life of anyone involved in health care, caring for a loved one who is sick, or experiencing chronic illness. Many of us deal with anxiety, addiction, and depression. Too many of us have experienced emotional and physical abuse. Whether you consider yourself a writer or not, the practice of writing can help you on your way to wellness and recovery. This is writing that is just for you. No one else needs to see what you wrote. The simple act of writing can be so positive for your mental and physical health.
The three days of our Health and Healing conference will be filled with people who are not only wonderful writers who have been through all the experiences mentioned above, but are kind, caring, compassionate individuals. You’ll find inspiration and encouragement, affirmation and acceptance.
I hope you will join us for what I know will be a powerful experience. If finances present a barrier, we have scholarships available, including some specifically for those in addiction recovery. Please reach out to us; we would love to help.
Warmly,
