AHSN Network launches innovation awards with NHS Confederation
New national awards to celebrate innovation in health and care have been launched by the AHSN Network, working in collaboration with NHS Confederation. The Innovate Awards are focused on celebrating excellence in innovation and transformation across the health and care system. There are 10 award categories as well as a 'winner of winners' award.
Anyone working in integrated care communities, including local authorities, care providers and other NHS health and care services, can enter. These awards represent a golden opportunity to tell the story of those who have collaborated and developed new initiatives against the backdrop of the pandemic.
The 10 award categories open for entry this year are:
• Net Zero Innovation of the Year
• The Diversity in Innovation Award
• Excellence in Patient and Public Involvement in Transformation and Innovation
• Innovation Spread Award
• Best Workforce Innovation
• Innovation Helping Address Health Inequalities
• Outstanding Contribution to Population Health Through Innovation
• Innovative Health System of the Year
• Outstanding Collaboration with Industry
• Enabling Safer Systems of Care Through Innovation.
The final award – Innovation Champion of the Year – will be selected by the judges from across the other category winners.
The closing date for submissions is midnight on 23 June and winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on 29 September 2022.

Surrey and Borders NHS Partnership FT (SABP) is looking for a Business Solutions Manager to lead the expansion and development of the remote monitoring service, "Technology Integrated Health Management" (TIHM).
Working across healthcare systems in Surrey Heartlands Integrated Care System (ICS), the post is an opportunity to:
• Help vulnerable people live at home independently for longer.
• Support early discharge from acute hospitals into community settings.
• Work as part of an integrated health and social care solution across Surrey Heartlands to support high risk patients in a community setting.
• Support the embedding of TIHM within SABP and wider system remote monitoring strategy.
It will involve working with clinicians, business functions, Trust management staff, clinical and social care professionals, and service users across Surrey Heartlands ICS to define, create, develop, and manage high quality remote monitoring solutions to support physical, mental, and social health.
SABP welcomes all applications for the role, such as a secondment, as well as part time/hybrid models.

Huntington’s Disease: service model co-production
A project involving KSS AHSN has developed a new service model that aims to improve care and support for people with Huntington’s disease.
The collaborative project involving Surrey Heartlands, KSS AHSN, Roche Products Ltd. and the Huntington’s Disease Association aimed to build on existing services to develop a fit-for-purpose service model providing equitable care.

SBRI cancer programme open to applications
Applications are now open for the SBRI cancer programme competition 2, which launched on 5 April. The competition is delivered in partnership with NHS England and NHS Improvement’s cancer programme.
This £15million competition invites applications for funding to implement solutions in late-stage development into front-line settings to improve early detection and diagnosis of cancer.
The deadline for applications is 24 May 2022.

Size of the Prize for High Blood Pressure
UCLPartners has launched ‘Size of the Prize’ for hypertension to support the new national Blood Pressure Optimisation Programme. For every Integrated Care System (ICS) in England, Size of the Prize shows how we can be very ambitious about preventing heart attacks and strokes at scale.

Integration and innovation
NHS Confederation has launched a new report that looks at how collaborations between providers at neighbourhood, place and system level are making a positive impact on patient care.
The report is the latest in its Integration and Innovation in Action series, and explores examples of provider collaboration at neighbourhood, place and system level. Based on interviews with leaders and clinicians, it also identifies a common set of principles that underpin partnership working – whatever the size or challenge.

NICE Lipid Management Pathway
The clinical pathway for lipid management has now been updated to include bempedoic acid to primary prevention and Inclisiran into the secondary prevention pathway. This pathway unifies multiple NICE guidance and technology appraisals into a single document to support clinical decision making on lipid management, supporting the NHS Long Term Plan’s ambitions for cardiovascular disease prevention and to improve patient outcomes.

Our first Innovator Support Day last month was a pilot that aimed to bring together a small number of companies that we’ve been supporting to share experiences and knowledge, with a particular focus on addressing health inequalities.

SimEPR: embedding digital skills in clinical training
Electronic systems are increasingly common in health and care settings but practical medical education continues to use paper-based methods. To combat this 'digital gap' SimEPR is a new technology that creates an educational experience more representative of current clinical practice.
As well as aligning training with modern clinical practice, SimEPR additionally equips the future workforce with the skills to safely and confidently use electronic patient records. This supports optimal patient outcomes by reducing the incidence of electronic system-related clinical errors.
SimEPR has been piloted at four medical simulation centers with overwhelmingly positive feedback from students:
• 86% of trainees reported SimEPR created a more realistic training experience.
• 82% of trainees reported SimEPR helped augment their clinical learning.
• 86% would recommend their department continues to use SimEPR for future simulation training sessions.
KSS AHSN has been supporting SimEPR and its founder Dr Arron Thind, providing the commercial and market insight needed to transform the technology from a prototype with an evidence base to an operational product.

Mental health competition
The NIHR Trauma MIC is running a competition as part of its new Mental Health (PTSD) workstream. The competition invites applications for medical devices/ technologies addressing the prevention and/ or management of the psychological impact of traumatic physical injury.
Any medical device-based solution for any psychological impact of traumatic physical injury will be considered. Up to three projects will be awarded in-kind support to the value of £15,000. Applications are encouraged from SME’s and individuals working for either HEIs or NHS Trusts.

Health Technology Regulatory and Innovation Programme Application Guide
If you are an SME working in HealthTech, you can apply for up to £30,000 of funding for use with regulatory affairs providers, to help you navigate regulatory pathways.
On behalf of Innovate UK, CPI and ABHI have developed the Health Technology Regulatory and Innovation Programme to support small and medium-sized (SME) businesses to navigate the complex and ever-changing HealthTech regulatory landscape.
The programme will support SMEs that rely on external expertise to commercialise new products, or re-register existing products in-line with new regulatory requirements.

Research Week
Professor Sally Kendall, Capacity Lead at NIHR Applied Research Collaboration Kent, Surrey and Sussex, has announced the programme for this year's Research Week. The sessions reflect equality, diversity and inclusion in all its forms and how it is important for applied research, researchers across all professions and disciplines and engaging with the public.
The week includes a line-up of learning and development events, research insight talks and presentations aimed primarily at early career researchers, PhD students and independent researchers and has been designed to help bring people together across academia, health and social care.
All events are free, with virtual events taking place 20-22 June and an in person all day symposium on 23 June at the University of Sussex.

Implementing the latest NICE approved Lipid Management Pathway

This webinar has been organised by the South East Academic Health Science Networks (KSS, Oxford and Wessex) and is open to all Multi-Disciplinary Health Care Professionals/clinicians and programme managers working within these regions with an interest or role in lipid management.
It's the first in a series of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) education sessions that will be delivered across the South East region throughout 2022/23. Polypharmacy: Getting the balance right

Following the success of the previous two polypharmacy events, a further webinar has been organised to demonstrate how polypharmacy prescribing comparators help us understand variation in prescribing of multiple medicines and identify patients more likely to be exposed to the risk of taking multiple, or combinations of, medicines.
