National Fall Prevention Week

KEY TAKEAWAY
This week is National Fall Prevention Week.
Take time to evaluate your work at the university or even at home. Identify fall hazards and establish means and methods to protect against falls.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) offers a national campaign, Safety Stand Down, Fall Prevention from May 2 - 6 to raise awareness on preventing falls in construction. Though the campaign targets construction work, fall prevention applies to any industry, organization or individual.

Ladders

  • Choose the right ladder for the job
  • Always ascend and descent the ladder while facing it
  • Maintain three points of contact on the ladder at all times
  • Secure all ladders before use

Heights

  • If required, wear a harness and always stay connected
  • Ensure the correct fit of harness
  • Use guardrails and lifelines
  • Inspect all fall protection prior to usage
  • Guard and cover all holes, skylights and openings
NEXT STEP
Review the Safety Field Guide for more information on how to prevent falls. Check your home for potential fall hazards and take a refresh course on the Slips, Trips and Falls as scheduled.
