For Your Heart and Mind
“Drawing Near to God”
Encouragement from Pastor David on what God is doing

Several decades ago, when I stepped onto the campus of Dallas Theological Seminary, I was thoroughly intimidated.

Why?

At some rock-bottom level, I keenly felt I didn’t belong. Not having met most of them, I nonetheless revered the faculty members. Though I had read the Bible often since becoming a Christian at age 9, I was yet a novice in The Book. In college, I struggled through my first year of Biblical Greek. I sensed an overwhelming academic tsunami was about to crash into my life. Plagued by quiet fears of failing, I often wondered, “What in the world am I doing here?”

As the initial fall semester unfolded, the tsunami came, and I was drowning. The intellectual effort I’d put forward in college was woefully inadequate for graduate school. I sat in classes quietly, fearful to venture questions. I remembered President Lincoln’s advice, “Better to remain silent and be considered a fool, rather than open one’s mouth and remove all doubt.”

One day, as I sat alone in the student lunch area, one of the Department of Historical Theology profs came strolling through with a brown bag in his hand. Suddenly, Dr. John Hannah stopped next to my table. “So,” he said rather matter-of-factly, “what’s eating your lunch these days?”

I was stunned. A DTS prof cared what was going through my head, and in my heart? “May I join you?” he continued.

“Sure!” I answered, and we unpacked sandwiches and chips together. He asked general and then personal questions. It was meaningful, thoughtful, sincere. In a freshly substantial way--through someone simply drawing near--I was given the assurance I belonged.

GOD’S INVITATION TO DRAW NEAR

Rather than being intimidated about God, we are openly invited by God to draw near.

I wouldn’t be surprised if when asked you said, “The letter from James is one of my favorite books in the Bible.” You’d have a lot of company. This Spirit-of-God prompted apostle offers so much that is simple and straightforward.

The next verses in James 4 offers a “how?”. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world (James 4:8b, NLT).

As we will take up this Sunday (May 1) in the Apostle John’s first letter, drawing close to God involves walking (or living) “in God’s light.” First steps in closeness with God involve being honest with Him about the sin in our daily living that is hindering God’s closeness.

As you prepare for worship on this coming Sunday, read 1 John 1:5-2:2. John and James agree. Closeness to God begins with the humility to both resist the devil and to allow the Lord to cleanse us from hindering, relationship-distancing sin.

See you Sunday!

Search firm representative to visit Cañon City this week!

Early on this week, Keith Twigg from The Slingshot Group pastoral search firm will be visiting Cañon City and our Free Church campus on May 2-3. Jim Watson and Anette Versaw are coordinating a series of meetings to help this firm understand our area, our ministry, our church culture, and the work we’ve done to identify the kind of pastoral leader the Lord will lead our way.

Slingshot’s counsel suggests that the overall process may take between 4-7 months. This means that the upcoming Spring and Summer months call for much prayer. Here are several items for you to bring before the Lord:

  1. Pray for the Spirit of God to make clear and successful the initial meetings between Keith Twigg and our Search Team, Staff, and other Free Church leadership

  2. Pray for God’s gift of wisdom for the search firm as it begins to identify candidates whom the Lord has prepared to be considered.

  3. Pray for Jim Watson’s careful and thoughtful leadership of our Search Team.

This will be an exciting Spring and Summer! Though your summer may involve traveling and being away, stay connected with our process. And please…PRAY!! Should you have questions about the upcoming process, feel free to contact Jim Watson or (interim) Pastor David Staff.

This Sunday at the Free Church
