This month, in partnership with Act for Farmed Animals, we’ve released our investigation of fish farming in Indonesia. This comes on the heels of our investigation of Thai fish farms last month, and documents the painful, stressful and unsanitary conditions fish endure at farm, transport, market and retail in Indonesia.

Indonesia and Thailand are among the top global producers and exporters of fish. Together these visuals offer a rare close-up into the lives of farmed fish and the environmental impacts of this massive southeast Asian industry.

A Pandemic for Birds

Masses of dead hens lie piled inside the bucket of a loader at an egg farm near Prague.
Lukas Vincour / We Animals Media

Bird populations across the world are being hit by the latest H5N1 avian influenza strain. Tens of millions are dying or being killed en masse by the industry trying to slow its spread, typically by shutting down ventilation systems; birds either suffocate or overheat to death.

Current media coverage focuses on the economic impact of H5N1 – but we focus on the animals. Use our newest bird flu images to highlight the impact on birds and the conditions they live in that facilitate its spread.

In Case You Missed It: Ukrainians Flee with Their Animals

Two small dogs are held tightly by their human guardians at the Ukrainian Polish border in Medyka, Poland.
Milos Bicanski / We Animals Media

Our contributors Andrew Skowron, Miloš Bičanski and Thomas Machowicz have been at the Polish border or in Ukraine, capturing how Ukrainian refugees are fleeing with their animals, and what Thomas calls the "animal rescue pipeline." This heartbreaking and senseless war has revealed moments of heroic care and compassion from Ukrainians and those helping them.
