Park announces Synchronous Firefly viewing dates


Great Smoky Mountains National Park will host the annual synchronous firefly viewing opportunity at Elkmont beginning Friday, June 3 through Friday, June 10. The public may apply for the limited viewing opportunity by entering a lottery for a vehicle pass through www.recreation.gov. The lottery opens for vehicle pass applications on Friday, April 29 at 10 a.m. through Tuesday, May 3 at 10 a.m. All applications, regardless of the time or date of entry, are considered equally in the pool of lottery applicants.

Shine Your Light for Firefighters on May 4. National Fallen Firefighters Foundation are asking the public to light their homes in “red”  to celebrate International Firefighters’ Day. Buildings, bridges and landmarks across the country will also be participating. Families can share their story on social media by using #Shine4Firefighters. For creative and compassionate kids (and adults) who want to let firefighters know that they are grateful for everything they do,  draw or color, and share your thank  by emailing a photo of your artwork to photos@firehero.org and using on social media with the hashtag #WeThankFFs.

JAM is WNC makers and music festival every Saturday 1 - 5 with free entry on Main street in historic downtown Sylva. Connect with local creators selling handmade goods, demonstrating their artistic process and teaching with workshops, all while enjoying live music.

Smoky Mountian Sk8way & Fun Zone Host Adults Only Skate every Thursday Night 7 - 10 pm with DJ Ken Brandenburg Cost is $8 and Includes Skates 

Smoky Mountain Pregnancy Care Centers in Cullowhee and Franklin have an educational parenting program to earn “Points” to use to obtain free items for your family. The centers carry formula, diapers, wipes, baby items, and clothing up to size 6, as well as strollers, car seats, high chairs, pack n’ plays, etc. Donations are always welcome. Food Pantries :

Manna Food Bank is now at Bethel United Methodist Church. To reserve a food box, call (828)634-1116 and leave a message with the following information: your first name and last initial; phone number to confirm pick-up time; number of people in your family; if there are allergies in the family; and any specialty items you might need, like diapers, etc. Pick up is at Bethel UMC, 81 Bethel Church Road, off Highlands Road.

Franklin Covenant Church- Host a Free Lunch And Pantry Once a Month on the fourth
Saturday of the month. It runs from 11:00 am until we either run out or there are no more people coming. It is a drive-through and to-go service. In addition to a free hot lunch, we give out dry goods and pantry supplies, like cleaning supplies, etc. 

Franklin Covenant Church Drive through Hot Lunch, Food Pantry and prayer as requested will be held on  Saturday, April 30,  starting at 11 a.m.,  265 Belleview Park Rd. 




Holly Springs Baptist Church, 2nd Mile Ministry is open 10 to Noon Mondays providing a food pantry, children's clothes, and financial aid (rent and utilities) for families and seniors in need. 

Five Fire Departments in Macon County – Nantahala, Cullasaja, Sky Valley, Clarks Chapel, and Burningtown – are open Monday thru Friday for drive-up food deliveries from 1 to 4 p.m. for anyone who needs food.

Hiking:

Nantahala Hiking Club on Saturday,  April 30, to  Darnell Creek Trail near Rabun Gap, GA. Darnell and Ramey Creeks make a loop hike where we will see waterfalls and many cascades. Ramey Creek Falls is 45′. There is a creek crossing where you will most likely have to wade across. Meet at the Smoky Mountain Visitor Center at 10 a.m. For more information, call Laura Lauffer (919)444-1478.

 Nantahala Hiking Club will take a moderate 3 mile hike on Sunday, May 1,  in Warwoman Dell. They will meet in the north end of Ingle’s parking lot in Clayton, Ga, at 1 p.m. and carpool to Warwoman Dell, about 5 miles from Hwy 441. Bring gear and fluids as needed. There should be lots of Spring wildflowers still blooming. There is no charge. Reservations are not needed. Historic T M Rickman Store is open Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at   259 Cowee Creek Rd. Dulcimer music in the morning and music jams begin at noon.
