Current South Australian COVID Regulations

Changes to Close Contact Requirements

South Australia will ease COVID-19 close contact rules as of 12.01am on April 30. It means close contacts of infected cases will no longer need to quarantine for seven days.

Close contacts will still need to wear a mask when they leave the home, complete five rapid antigen tests within seven days and are prohibited from high-risk settings like hospitals and aged care facilities.

If a close contact develops symptoms, they must undertake a PCR test and isolate until they receive their result. Those who test positive will still be required to quarantine for seven days. For further information visit covid-19.sa.gov.au.

Testing and Clinic information:

For information on testing, if you have tested positive or are a close contact, visit the SA Health website for information here. A full list of requirements regarding testing and quarantine of people who have been diagnosed with or exposed to COVID-19 is available here.

Tips for Small Businesses to Handle Inflation

This week the team at SmartCompany have put together some useful information for small businesses to help them prepare for the impact of inflation after official figures confirmed the cost of living has surged at a rate not seen in more than a decade.

Consumer price index (CPI) figures, released this week by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, show the cost of goods and services rose 2.1% over the March 2022 quarter, lifting the annual inflation rate to 5.1%. ABS advised that the cost of transportation surged 13.7% over the quarter as conflict in Ukraine drove fuel price increases across the globe. Shortages of materials and labour in the building industry helped the cost of housing rise 6.7%, while the cost of new dwellings for owner-occupiers lifted 5.7%.

The number of registered businesses rose from 1.68 million in March 2009 to 3.03 million in March 2022, meaning many business operators are experiencing severe price hikes for the first time in their careers. In the article, Gavin Ord from CPA Australia has advised that business operators should plan for a 5% wage increase and although this may not happen, businesses need to be prepared for this scenario. Ord also suggests that businesses should focus on high-margin goods and services to improve your cash position. Focus your promotional activity on high turnover items that have a good profit margin and reduce or remove products or services that have low turnover and low profit margin.

If you are unsure of how your business will navigate the current inflation and the potential interest rate rises, make sure you speak to your accountant. You can read the full article here. For information on our Small Business Support, contact RDALC on 8723 1057 or to find out more about Rural Business Support’s Financial Counselling, click here

ATO Urges Vigilance Following New Scams Approach

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is urging taxpayers to be vigilant following an increase in reports of fake websites offering to provide tax file numbers (TFN) and Australian business numbers (ABN) for a fee but failing to provide the service.

The fake TFN and ABN services are often advertised on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The advertisements offer to obtain a TFN or ABN for a fee. Instead of delivering this service, the scammer uses these fraudulent websites to steal both money and personal information.

It is free, quick and easy to use Government services to apply for a TFN through the ATO, or apply for an ABN through the Australian Business Register (ABR)

If you choose to apply for a TFN or ABN through a tax agent, you should always check that the tax agent is registered with the Tax Practitioners Board.

Read more about the scam alert here and how to identify and report tax and super scams here. For more information, visit the ATO here.

Market Prioritisation and Category Prioritisation Scorecards

As part of developing the 5 Year South Australia Food and Beverage Export Strategy, a Market Prioritisation scorecard has been designed for businesses to use to identify the markets where they are most likely to get the highest return on investment. Through this process, priority markets have been defined by assessing economic, political, business, product and trade landscapes of various export markets.

As an input to the Market Prioritisation scorecard, individual product categories have been assessed and 28 Category Prioritisation scorecards have also been developed. These category scorecards give businesses an in-depth look into their own categories.
