This weekend (and Wednesday) we have our final cinema sessions until June. We welcome the Cowra Eisteddfod back for their annual event which takes over the building for most of May. Don’t miss Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren in The Duke or the touching film Nowhere Special which is based on a true story. See below for trailers and times.

We still have a couple of fabulous live events next week including our special Launch and performance of Stardust + The Mission on Tuesday night. Remember this is a free event to attend and we encourage you to bring your friends along.

We will also be presenting Bach to Bolling next Friday night. What happens when you thrust jazz and Bach together? In the hands of four incredible musicians – an evening of unbelievable music you will not want to miss!

We look forward to seeing you soon, catching up with friends and enjoying the amazing entertainment on offer at Cowra Civic Centre.

The Duke - Official Trailer

THE DUKE

A true story of Kempton Bunton, a 60-year old taxi driver, who stole Goya’s portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London. Kempton sent ransom notes saying that he would return the painting on condition that the government invested more in care for the elderly - he had long campaigned for pensioners to receive free television. What happened next became the stuff of legend. Starring Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren.

LAUNCH and
STARDUST + THE MISSION

Since Cowra Civic Centre changed its operating model at the beginning of 2020, we have been challenged by closures, cancellations and COVID-19. Until now we have only been able to have a few ad hoc live events and a cinema program that has started and stopped multiple times.

Now we would like to bring the community together to relaunch Cowra Civic Centre and its new life. This event will include those who have contributed so much so far to guiding the future directions of this much loved cultural asset in Cowra. We will cover the journey so far, the successes to date and where the venue is heading in the future.

PLUS! We gift you a free performance of double bill Stardust + The Mission

Two powerful yet forgotten Australian stories uncovering our past to reveal who we are today. Stardust tells the story of bandleader and trumpet player Col Brain. Before he died, Col placed his most prized life possessions into a cupboard and locked it up, never to be opened again. But what was inside? Told by his grandson, award winning ABC presenter and performer, Joel Carnegie, Stardust is a heart-warming musical quest to uncover what Col wanted us to know about his life by the things he left behind.

The Mission follows “Fighting Gunditjmara” man Allan McDonald off to war. As one of the first Aboriginal soldiers from Victoria to enlist, Allan fought at Gallipoli and Beersheba, only to be denied a soldier’s settlement upon return and forced from his traditional land. Told by his great, great nephew, acclaimed Gunditjmara actor Tom Molyneux, The Mission tells the truth of Uncle Allan’s struggle; fighting for Country, for love, and for justice.
