The LISS Call 2022 is now open. Researchers affiliated with one of the ODISSEI member organisations can apply for free data collection through the LISS panel and for funding for a project that expands the LISS panel data with CBS microdata.
On 2 June 2022, from 13:00 to 15:00 hours, ODISSEI and Centerdata are organising an online information event during which researchers can learn more about working with the LISS panel and the grant application procedure.

ODISSEI - eScience Call 2022 open

The ODISSEI - eScience Call 2022 is now open. This call offers researchers in-kind investment consisting of hours worked by Research Software Engineers (RSEs) from the Netherlands eScience Center. In total, funding for five projects is available. Each will have access to three months of in-kind support. In preparation for the Call, the Netherlands eScience Center and ODISSEI organise an online information event on June 14, from 13.00 to 15.00 hours, where potential applicants can learn more about the eScience Center, the type of research software expertise eScience Center can apply in the research projects, and the application procedure.

CBS - ODISSEI Microdata Meeting on efficient programming and SURF workshop on supercomputing

On 16 May, from 14.00 - 15.00 hours, Erik-Jan van Kesteren (UU) will present on the ways in which you can deal with the computational limits of the CBS Remote Access environment. He will give an accessible introduction to the variety of ways in which you can programme more efficiently when using microdata in your research. Furthermore, he will discuss when you should and should not move your project to the ODISSEI Secure Supercomputer. Those who after this meeting want to know more about conducting research on the supercomputer can register for a workshop that takes place on 24 May at SURF: ‘Supercomputing for Social Scientists with R’, a workshop organised in collaboration with ODISSEI.

Building a FAIR Expertise Hub for the social sciences

It is increasingly common for researchers to rely on the use of data sets that were not originally intended for research purposes. These data sets sometimes lack appropriate documentation and information about how they were created and are sometimes less reliable. The project ‘Building a FAIR Expertise Hub for the social sciences’, which was recently awarded funding by the Platform Digital Infrastructure Social Science and Humanities (PDI-SSH), is aimed at targeting this issue by supporting the data providers in the social sciences in improving the Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability and Reusability (FAIRness) of their data.

From crisis to renaissance: Rense Corten about the future of empirical sociology

The rise of big companies that collect data on a large scale could, according to some sociologists, lead to the downfall of empirical sociology. Surveys would become irrelevant due to the development of modern techniques and data collection by big companies. In Sociologie Magazine, Rense Corten (Utrecht University) writes about this pessimistic view on the future of sociology that was current in 2007. He reflects - fifteen years later - on the question whether empirical sociology really is in such a poor state by now.

SURF Research Week: ODISSEI & Health-RI

On Tuesday 10 May, from 12.00 to 13.00 hours, Tom Emery and Lucas van der Meer will represent ODISSEI at the SURF Research Week during a session in collaboration with Health-RI. The session will explore a possible synergy in IT and organisational frameworks between these two resear ch infrastructures. What do they offer and how are they organized? Both science disciplines work with sensitive data; how is this facilitated? This session highlights the major challenges for both parties, followed by an interactive discussion about the added value of working together.

“XR on tour” by the SURF Open Innovation Lab

 From April to June 2022 the SURF Open Innovation Lab is organizing "XR on Tour", in which they will visit various events and institutions. The goal of the tour is to inspire and find potential new use(r)s of different forms of XR, to strengthen connections with existing XR hubs and local communities, and in general to promote XR as a technology that can be beneficial to research and education in The Netherlands.

Registration open for the Netherlands National Open Science Festival

 It is now possible to register for the second edition of the Netherlands National Open Science Festival which will take place at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam on 1 September 2022. This year the festival contains two tracks. Track 1: ‘Open Science in Practice’ (all day) invites active researchers working in the Netherlands. The parallel track 2: ‘Open Science in Policy’ (afternoon) invites everyone interested in Open Science policy. |

 The Computational Science Lab (CSL) at the Faculty of Science, Urban Geography at the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the Institute for Advanced Study is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to work on the COMPASS project. In addition to working on the COMPASS project, the postdoc will also contribute to the activities of the ODISSEI Social Data Science (SoDa) team at Utrecht University.

 The Netherlands eScience Center is looking for two research software engineers (RSEs) in the social sciences and humanities to join the eScience Center Team. As a RSE, you will typically work on 2 or 3 projects simultaneously. Projects vary in size from three-month consultancy projects to large multi-year collaborations. RSEs are explicitly encouraged to explore technological and disciplinary fields outside of their main expertise and can develop their skills by following external training, leading projects and attending conferences and community events.
