Dear partners,

We hope this newsletter finds you well. EU affairs, new partnership, trip to strengthen our network, launch of the Ukrainian emergency response fund and attendance of our 2022 general assembly:  here is a recap of our main joint activities since our last newsletter in March.

1) Is business being ally enough in the fight against racism?

Did you know that inability to provide a healthy, equal and supportive work environment for racialised people in the workplace costs a country like France  1.5% of its total GDP each year?

Following his recent trip to meet with Equal@Work partners, ENAR’s Director, Kim Smouter has published an opinion piece reflecting on the role of businesses as a driving force to challenge structures of powers and oppression of racialised people, treating anti-racism as an organisational issue and ensuring racial justice mainstreaming throughout all departments rather than lead by human resources.

2) Another new addition to Equal@Work!

Welcome to SAP! We are thrilled to see SAP joining the Equal@Work platform to work together on racial justice in employment and dismantling the structural barriers racialised groups are facing to fully access and participate to the labour market. SAP is a German multinational software corporation developing enterprise software to manage business operations and customer relations.

3) Launching the Ukrainian Emergency Response fund
The war in Ukraine has a disproportionate impact on racialised people seeking safety in Europe. Whether it be when leaving Ukraine to reach neighbouring countries or when accessing basic needs and services, they are met with violence and exclusion.  ENAR has been calling out the double standards in the management of this crisis and advocating for frameworks that protect all people fleeing the conflict. The ENAR Foundation has set up an Emergency Response fund to operationalise it further.

The fund is established in order to support grassroots organisations providing financial, legal, and material assistance to racialised individuals and communities fleeing Ukraine. The programme covers expenditures such as transportation, accommodation, subsistence, legal support, mental health support, consular support, and direct costs supported by the organisation to manage these activities.

4) EU Affairs update: diversity month
The European Commission has marked the month of May as the European Diversity Month across the EU. They are calling on companies and organisations across Europe to join forces with them to shine a spotlight on the importance of diversity and inclusion in the workplace and in society by organising events and activities throughout May. The theme of this year is Building Bridges between organisations and areas of inclusion and diversity policy (race, gender, age, etc).

The European Commission encourages stakeholders to build partnerships with NGOs, governmental institutions, other companies or civil society to promote diversity, as well as building bridges between the different aspects of diversity to make sure that policies and activities are more intersectional.

More information on the upcoming events throughout May on the EU Diversity website.
5) General Assembly Attendance Invitation
ENAR is hosting its General Assembly "Decolonising Justice": A vision for the future of racial justice in Europe" and is inviting you to attend a session on 20th May 2022 at 15.00 – 18.00 CEST in Brussels. This session will be a panel discussion on what decolonised approaches to justice might look like. It will be an in-person panel discussion and will be followed by an activity for ENAR network members to engage with the themes that the speakers cover. A formal invitation will be sent in the coming days.
That's a wrap for the moment! Thank you very much to everyone of you involved in this important work!

Take care, and we will catch up with you soon!
