Call for Papers for Global Conversations: Materiality and Mediation

We invite you to send proposals for our upcoming Global Conversation on Materiality and Mediation, brought to you by CAA, and its affiliated societies, the Design History Society, and the International Association of Word and Image Studies. This global collaborative project brings together three intersecting constituencies—art and design, design history, and word and image studies—to examine how materiality and mediation intersect. As a part of our programming throughout the year, this event will take place on October 4, 2022. Send your proposals by June 14, 2022

Revealing Krishna: Journey to Cambodia’s Sacred Mountain

Nominations Open for CAA Juries

CAA invites nominations and self-nominations for individuals to serve on our Awards for Distinction, Publication Grant, Fellowship, and Travel and Support Grant juries. Materials are due to CAA by June 1, 2022.

Candidates must possess expertise appropriate to the jury’s work and be current CAA members. They should not hold a position on a CAA committee or editorial board beyond May 31, 2022. CAA’s president and vice president for committees appoint jury members for service. Terms begin July 2022.

Nominations and self-nominations should include a brief statement (no more than 150 words) outlining the individual’s qualifications and experience and a CV (an abbreviated CV of no more than two pages may be submitted). Additional details are available on our website.

Art Journal Open Editor-in-Chief 

We have extended our deadline for our Art Journal Open’s Editor-in-Chief to serve for a three-year term. Art Journal Open(AJO) is an open-access digital journal for the visual arts, which presents artists’ projects, conversations and interviews, scholarly essays, and other forms of content from across the cultural field. Contributions focus on post-1945 material, with an emphasis on the contemporary and underrepresented perspectives.  

The editor is responsible for commissioning all content for AJO, including projects, texts, and time-based content by artists and other authors, and determines the appropriate scope and format of each project. Qualifications for the position include a broad knowledge of current art, the ability to work closely with artists in a wide variety of practices, and experience in developing written and other content for arts platforms.

A Small Matter of Agency

Published open access in CAA's Art Journal Open, Anthony Gardner does a comparative review of Art in Theory: The West in the World—An Anthology of Changing Ideas and Mapping Modernisms: Art, Indigeneity, Colonialism, two texts considered critical to decolonizing art historical institutions in the North Atlantic. Fred Rouse was a butcher living in Fort Worth, lynched by a white mob after defending himself from attack. Published on CAA’s Art Journal Open, Will Wilson and Adam W. Member Spotlight: Tiarna Doherty

Tiarna Doherty is an art conservator and art historian who holds a Master of Science degree in Art Conservation from the Winterthur/University of Delaware. She is currently serving as Chair of the Jury for Award for Distinction in Scholarship and Conservation at CAA. An Art History PhD Candidate at the University of Delaware, Doherty is completing her dissertation “Vicente Carducho’s Studio-Academy: Modelling Artistic Practice and Connoisseurship in Early Modern Spain.” Her scholarly interests include artistic identity, connoisseurship, and the confluence of art and science. Doherty has published in the fields of conservation, technical art history, and art history, such as her article, “Painting Connoisseurship. Liefhebbers in the Studio” in the Netherlands Yearbook for the History of Art from 2019. Other publications by Doherty can be found here

Doherty has twenty years of experience working in museums and has established herself as a leader in the art conservation field, organizing several professional development opportunities for museum colleagues of diverse disciplinary backgrounds. She also has ran dynamic programs like “Playing Pong in 2100: How to Preserve Old Video Games” and  “Conserving and Exhibiting the Works of Nam June Paik” out of the Lunder Conservation Center as the Chief of Conservation for the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Previously, she worked for ten years as a Paintings Conservator at the J. Paul Getty Museum.
