MAY 2022

NEWSLETTER

Dear <<First Name>>,

May is a very special month, not only is it Africa Month, but it comes hot on the heels of celebrating  South Africa’s Freedom day on the 27 Apr, thus offering us an opportunity to reflect on the progress we have made in transforming our society since our first democratic election in 1994. As with our country, it is important to reflect on the ongoing transformation of our workplaces - workplaces made up of a diverse range of people. In the workplace, embracing diversity, equality and inclusion equates to freedom - freedom to express our authentic selves, the freedom of a level playing field and the freedom of being found acceptable and included in one’s work community in order to reach one’s highest potential.

In the May newsletter we bring you an article that examines the growing problem of rudeness in the workplace and how to tackle it.  We take a look at how to support employees who are facing retirement.

We ask the question, “Are EAPs keeping pace with change?” and last but not least, take a look at ways of increasing EAP usage.

We always enjoy hearing from you. Feel free to get in touch with inputs on how we can improve this important resource, your Newsletter!

Tackling a Growing Problem of Workplace Rudeness

Regardless of the nature of your work, you have probably encountered some form of rude behaviour at work at one time or another. You may have encountered a co-worker who never responds to your emails or who does not respond when a meeting invite is sent to them. You may have been routinely ignored or talked over by a colleague in a meeting or conference call. Traditionally, managers may have overlooked such rudeness, seeing it as a minor infringement and paid more attention to cases of overt discrimination or harassment. >>>

Supporting Employees Who Are Facing Retirement

Retirement is something that every employee needs to think about - it signifies a very abrupt change to one’s lifestyle. Some people cannot wait to retire; it is a goal they have planned for and have anticipated for many years. But this is not true for everyone. For many mature workers, their job provides much needed income and makes up an important part of their identity. The transition to retirement can certainly be a challenging time of life and this can cause employees to put off thinking about it, fail to plan or even try to avoid it altogether. >>>

Are EAPs Keeping Pace with Change?

In the last 26 months, Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs) have had to turn a corner, and fast, due to large-scale disruptions caused by COVID-19. From perhaps being seen as “just another employee benefit”, they have become an essential support service that is seen to be evolving and broadening its focus to keep pace with change, not only to support workers’ emotional wellbeing, but also to prevent wellbeing levels from sinking. How are EAPs keeping pace with employee needs since the advent of the COVID-19 and subsequent crises that have affected South African workers? >>>

Five Tips for Increasing EAP Usage

Why do EAPs tend to be underused, despite the fact that they are free for employees to use? Before COVID-19, numerous studies were consistent in pegging EAP usage at less than 10%.  As employees have increasingly turned to EAPs during COVID-19, employers have the opportunity to capitalise on this upswing by continuing to promote their EAP offering even as virus concerns decrease. >>>

CPD points are a way of measuring the time and quality of learning and development (L&D) activities.

Each EAPASA member is expected to acquire between 15 and 20 CPD points annually, depending on your designation.
  • Renewal of membership must be done annually in order to remain in good standing with the association.
  • All renewal of membership must be done no later than 30 January annually in order to avoid the payment of a penalty.
  • In order to restore membership, you will be expected to pay the normal fee and the additional year missed respectively.
