Last Friday we celebrated the important contributions of graduate student instructors at our annual Graduate Student Teaching Recognition Ceremony.

Join Us for ETD Next Week

There’s still time to register for this year’s Excellence in Teaching Day, being held on Monday, May 9 in Gasson Hall. Across two sets of morning breakout sessions, a lunchtime keynote, and hands-on workshop in the afternoon, ETD this year explores the question, “Who is the Classroom Built For?” Find full ETD details and registration information on the CTE website.

Congrats Graduate Student Instructors!

On April 29th, faculty mentors, family, and friends gathered to celebrate this year’s 17 Apprenticeship in College Teaching (ACT) Program graduates and 60 Donald J. White Teaching Excellence Award winners. The ceremony included congratulatory words by Vice Provost for Faculties Billy Soo, remarks by Paul Cichello, Associate Professor of the Practice in the Department of Economics, and reflections from award recipient Hannah Vinande, a French M.A. Student in the Department of Romance Languages & Literatures. See our Graduate Student Teaching Recognition Ceremony page for a list of awardees and more information about the ACT Program and the Donald J. White Awards.

Prepping for Summer: Canvas Essentials

For those preparing to teach in-person courses this summer, we have a few options to help you get up-to-speed with the various technologies you might want to draw on.

Remote Workshops

Our “Canvas Essentials” workshop series will take place remotely, and include 60 minutes of content followed by 30 minutes of Q&A. Please email centerforteaching@bc.edu to RSVP for any workshops you would like to attend, and you will receive a Zoom link one business day prior to the session. The Tech Drop-in will be hybrid; please indicate when you RSVP if you would like to attend in person or via Zoom.

  • Canvas: Basics | Monday, May 2, 1:00-2:30
  • Canvas: Assignments and Grading | Thursday, May 12, 2:00-3:30
  • Canvas: New Quizzes | Wednesday, May 11, 10:00-11:30
  • Tech Drop-in | Friday, May 13, 9:30-11:00

Recordings

If you can’t make a scheduled workshop, you can also find recordings from past trainings we’ve offered (if prompted to login, please use the same credentials as for Canvas and the portal):

Consultations

You’re also always welcome to reach out to centerforteaching@bc.edu to request an individual consultation with a member of our staff. We’re happy to think with you about a range of pedagogical questions, including how technology can help further your course goals.

Launching 2022-23 Cohorts

This month we were excited to welcome our eighth group of participants to the Faculty Cohorts on Teaching program. Twenty-four faculty are participating in kick-off meetings meant to launch our year-long investigations into “Teaching for Inclusion and Social Justice” and “Applying Learning Sciences to our Teaching.” Participants will meet monthly during the next academic year, delving into the teaching literature and preparing cases about their own teaching questions.

Assistant Director Search: Thank You

We are incredibly grateful to the many faculty and other campus partners who came out the past few weeks to meet the finalists for our new Assistant Director of Teaching, Learning, and Technology position. Your thoughtful questions and keen observations have been invaluable to our decision-making. We will be making an offer soon and hope to introduce our new colleague to you in the next newsletter.
