HELLO DEAR READERS,
I hope you are enjoying the return of sunshine and looking forward to a world with no mask as much as I am.  To refresh and experience a much-needed change of scenery, my Wife, Designer Courtney Sloane, and I enjoyed a month in one of our favorite places in the world, Costa Rica.  We have been going there together for 18 years. We spent as much time as possible in our town of Tamarindo on the beaches where there is a delicious mix of restaurants, highly trained masseuses, beautiful vistas of the ocean sunsets, boats, surfers, fast walkers, yoga practitioners, iguanas and joyful children splashing in the waves or building sand castles. We visited with our long-time friends, stocked up at the local Farmers’ Market where I picked up a Dreamcatcher for my artist friend, Danielle Scott, to gift to her Choctaw wife. We experienced a private Cacao Ceremony, a Sound Bath with others in a geodesic dome. It was followed by a delicious farm-to-table dinner at the La Senda glamping retreat, owned by our friends Anne and Grietje. They are proprietors of Cala Luna Hotel, the site of our wedding 15 years ago. Each time we visit, we explore new areas of this beautiful and diverse country.  This time The Wife took me to Escalante for some urban life.  We stayed at what has to be the tallest building in Costa Rica, the Brutalist URBN. It was once a Jewish neighborhood that went through a derelict phase before being regenerated, as is always the case, by artists who have covered the streetscapes with graffiti, opened numerous charming and idiosyncratic restaurants and bars. As always, we ate lots of food--glorious food! Not to worry about my weight gain– it was all gluten-free and vegan and I swam laps every other morning.

WARM REGARDS,
Cheryl
IMPACT

I am blessed to have a studio in the beehive that is ART150 in the same building where I live.  It is a wonderful group of artists and because there is also a gallery space, we are producing a group show called impact!  I hope you can come to see the amazing variety and quality of works created by the artists of ART150.  I will be exhibiting my second limited edition print—HE WAS NO ANGEL.  This frame 16” x 20” work on paper is a contemplative mirror of how American mass society and institutions rationalize Police brutality, unaccountability and lawlessness against African American males.

If the framed version in the exhibit does not fit your decor or is sold, I have others in the edition unframed.  The entrance for the ART150 Gallery is on First Street between Marin Blvd. and Provost Street in Jersey City.  “150” is above the two glass doors entrance and the gallery is on the 2nd floor, accessible through the elevator.  Hope to see you there or feel free to place your order for shipping to the address you provide by reaching me at cherylrriley@gmail.com.

I am showing this work above:

Berry Campbell interview at Frieze with Nanette Carter

NANETTE CARTER - “Shape Shifting”
Berry Campbell Gallery, 530 West 24th Street, NYC April 28-May 27, 2022
In conversation with Cheryl R. Riley
May 19, 2022 6:30pm

I had the honor of spending quality time with my long-time friend and fellow artist, Nanette Carter earlier this year. I was commissioned by the Smithsonian’s Archive of American Art to interview her over four multi-hour sessions in her Harlem home/studio.  On Monday, I observed her at Berry Campbell Gallery while she painstakingly Installed the marvelous collages that she attaches directly to the wall.  You are looking at the installation of Destabilizing #1 in process.

On May 19, at 6:30pm I will have the pleasure of sharing her with those of you who are able to attend our conversation at the Gallery.  Come early to preview these works that are even more vibrant in person.  I look forward to seeing you there.

WAVEHILL ARTIST RESIDENCY
I love discovering and fostering the next wave of talented artists, especially those of the Black African Diaspora.  I was invited to studio critiques at Wave Hill of artists in residence earlier this month.  Located on the Hudson River in the Bronx, it is bucolic and inspirations the natural surroundings fostered for the artists was exciting.  Keep an eye out for these new Creatives:  Deep Pool, Christopher Lin, Caroline Garcia (demonstrating her poison darts blow tube) Amina Ross (shown in their studio), and Xavier Robles.
ORACLE CARDS

I am honored by the reception and orders for the Oracle deck. A transformation derived from my Glyphs on Pages of a 1957 Encyclopedia, they were called into existence during my all female-identified artists residency, Rites of Passage, Produced by Pooja Prema. Unlike Tarot Cards, you are the interpreter of the answers to your questions. Another batch has arrived, so if you are one of the many who are waiting to place your orders for yourself or to gift, you may do so now.
