On Sunday, May 1st at 4PM, there will be a get-together and a photo opportunity with the Southern Star to voice our objections to the proposed changes by Cork County Council to Glandore pier.
The proposal by Cork Co Council could result in a ban of all marine leisure activity from Glandore Harbour. If you’re not already aware, please note the plan below by Cork Co. Council to “designate storage areas” on Glandore Pier. This has been drawn up without any consultation whatsoever with Glandore Harbour Yacht Club or with the sailing school. This proposal amounts in reality to a closure order on the sailing school not to mention all the kayakers, motor boaters, rowers etc. who also use the pier.
This is despite the fact that GHYC pay annually for use of the pier and despite the fact that GHYC members personally fund a pontoon for the benefit of the public and all harbour users.
A GHYC member personally funded an engineering survey and presented it to the Council with drawings and plans to extend the current deck onto waste ground. This would have provided extra storage for all kayaks and many of the dinghys currently on the pier in summer. This cost and effort received no response.
The next step may be to manufacture a report to close the pier completely on safety grounds. This is completely contrary to the County Development Plan for the area. If you want to stop this, you need to make a submission this weekend to berthing@corkcoco.ie, but please copy your objection and title it as a complaint to: customercare@corkcoco.ie and also to all your local representatives and TDs.
Please urge Cork Co Council to do something positive with the funding they’ve received and immediately extend the storage area as designed to provide some relief in the peak period or to do something else positive which will be of benefit to the community such as racks for the kayaks.
